Spartans Take Sixth at the Briar’s Creek Invitational

JOHNS ISLAND, South Carolina – The Michigan State women's golf team wrapped up the Briar's Creek Invitational on Tuesday in South Carolina, taking sixth place. The Spartans posted their best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 3-under-par 285 and finished the event 29-over-par 893 (307-301-285), which was just seven shots out of the top three.

Host College of Charleston won the event at The Club at Briar's Creek with a 9-over-par 873, one shot better than second place Miami.
With darkness halting the completion of the second round on Monday, the teams resumed on Tuesday morning to close out the second round. MSU shot a 13-over-par 301 in round two but responded in round three by cutting 16 strokes off its middle round total with a 285 over the final 18 holes.
Freshman Leila Raines had the best showing of her young career by tying for fourth place. Raines fired a 6-under-par 66 in the final round which included six birdies and not a single bogey. She finished 1-over-par 217 (75-76-66).
Valery Plata carded her best round of the tournament on Tuesday with a 1-under-par 71, helping her to climb into a tie for 13th place. Plata was 5-over-par 221 (76-74-71) for the tournament.
Like Plata, Paz Marfa Sans improved her score over each round, culminating with a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. She tied for 50th place at 13-over-par 229 (82-74-73).
Yurika Tanida was 15-over-par 231 (74-82-75) and Sydney Naro 25-over-par 241 (85-77-79).
Valentina Rossi played as an individual and equaled Plata's score of 5-over-par 221 (75-75-71) to also tie for 13th place.
Victoria Hund of the College of Charleston claimed medalist honors with a 6-under-par 210.
Next up for Michigan State will be the Clemson Invitational, March 27-28, in Sunset, South Carolina.
