Kloosterman nets first goal of season.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Michigan State women's soccer battled tough but was defeated, 2-1, at Indiana on Wednesday at a cold, windy Hoosiers' Bill Armstrong Stadium.
The Spartans suffered their fourth loss in a row by a one-goal margin, including the second 2-1 score. Indiana got on the board partway through the first half, before MSU leveled it a few minutes later, only to have the Hoosiers net the go-ahead goal on a penalty kick in the early minutes of the second half.
"I thought it was another strong performance by us like the last couple have been at home" MSU head coach Tom Saxton said. "We really challenged the team at halftime to put together a better second half, as we fell short in terms of results in the last couple matches. I thought we did that today. Unfortunately, we were bewildered by the penalty call in the first five minutes. Our team just kept fighting, we created some really nice pressure late in the game but unfortunately, the result stands, but I think that we were pleased with the effort over 90 minutes more so than any in the last couple of weeks."
The Spartans are now 1-8-1 this season, having lost eight-straight games. With the win, Indiana improves to 6-4, completing back-to-back wins over the Michigan schools after a 2-0 win at Michigan on Sunday.
Indiana struck first in the 23rd minute, Jen Blitchok delivered a great ball to Gabi Rennie, who sliced the past sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal to the lower left corner.
Before the half ended, Michigan State was able to find the equalizer. In the 37th minute, senior Danielle Stephan, who leads the Spartans with four assists, found sophomore Sydney Kloosterman with a nice long pass from near midfield into the box, where Kloosterman fired a left-footed firecracker to the upper right corner past sprawling IU keeper Bethany Kopel. It was Kloosterman's first goal and first points of the season and her second career goal.
"I thought we had a great lift off the bench with Sidney Kloosterman who scored the goal" Saxton added.
The score would remain 1-1 until halftime, as the Spartans had
The home team Hoosiers broke the 1-1 tie early in the second half, as in the 47th minute, a Hoosier was fouled in the box, and Indiana's Avery Lockwood slotted the penalty kick in the back of the net.
The MSU defense turned away several Indiana chances, as the Hoosiers earned a handful of corners, but the Spartan defense turned them away.
"I think Lauren Kozal in goal was very, very solid and Samantha White at center back is our anchor back there," Saxton said about the Spartans' sold defense. "I honestly thought Zivana Labovic continued to play strong, she really did a nice job in the air for us. We switched our defensive system in the midfield and left her alone as a defensive midfielder and she handled herself very, very well, so she stands out. I also thought Alex Thomas, who was a late add to the lineup, did a nice job too, so we had a lot of people step up today."
In the 72nd minute, Michigan State moved the ball down and got a quality chance with sophomore Raegan Cox getting a shot off in the middle of the box, but Kopel made the save, keeping the score at 1-1.
MSU continued to push for the equalizer, and in the 84th minute, senior Michelle Herring made a nice move down the left win and got a cross lofted to the top of the 18-yard box, where Cox ran onto it and fired a volley shot that went just high and wide past the goal.
Roughly two minutes later the Spartans earned a free kick and got the ball into the box and the ball bounced around in the scrum as MSU tried to slot it home to level the score, but was turned away by the Hoosier defense.
Michigan State will before close out the home schedule against Ohio State on Saturday, April 3 on the Spartans' Senior Day.
