EAST LANSING, Mich. - In the third meeting of the season, the Michigan State women's tennis team was edged by Penn State, 4-3, at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Sunday morning.
The Spartans are now 4-10 overall and 4-9 in Big Ten action. Penn State improves to 8-6 overall this season. This is the third time that the Nittany Lions have stopped the Spartans by the same 4-3 margin.
"The thing after having so many close matches it to remember that we have to get back to work. I can tell it is wearing on us a bit. I don't like to say it, but I think it is becoming a bit of a habit. We have to figure out how to stop that," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said. "We still have some season left, and I will be the first one to get back to work on Tuesday. We just have to keep plugging away. There is no way that one of these isn't going to go our way. You can see that the girls are doing a lot of the right things."
The doubles point came down to the final match at No. 2 doubles. The match came down to a tiebreaker between Samantha Memije and Nicole Stephens facing Alexandra Nielsen and Sofia Chekhlystova. In the tiebreaker, the Lions pulled away to take the tiebreaker 7-1 for the 7-6 win. Michigan State won the first doubles match when senior Mary Lewis and junior Maja Pietrowicz defeated Gabby O'Gorman and Karly Friedland, 6-4. The Nittany Lions recovered at No. 3 doubles when Olivia Ryan and Samantha Smith stopped freshman Ayshe Can and sophomore Dagmar Zdrubecka, 6-2.
In singles action, the Spartans tied the score at 1-1 at No. 4 singles when Pietrowicz made easy work of Friedland in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Penn State jumped back out ahead, 2-1, at the No. 1 spot. O'Gorman beat junior Lauren Lemonds in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The Nittany Lions increased its lead to 3-1 when Smith stopped Can, 7-5, 6-1. The match continued to tighten up from there. Lewis battled hard to defeat Chekhlystova, 6-4, 7-6 at the No. 2 spot.
With Penn State leading 3-2, the match came down to matches on No. 3 and No. 6 singles. PSU's Alina Lebedeva won the first set against Stephens, 6-3, before the Spartan junior battled back to take the second set, 6-3. The final set went back and forth before Lebedeva took the final set, 6-4 to clinch the match. In another close battle, Memije edged Frederikke Svarre in three sets, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5.
Michigan State hits the road to take on Illinois on Friday, April 9 and Northwestern on Sunday, April 11.
