Gia Wahlberg scored her second goal of the season.
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 Penn State Sunday in University Park, Pennsylvania.
"We had a little bit of an injury issue with the back line, but I am really pleased with the way the backline came together. We got going in the second part of the first half and got the equalizer. We made some improvements over the game against Rutgers in terms of our 1-v-1 play, for the most part we were better organized. Again, we are a little beat up in the backline, but we had some people step up and play hard for us and play well," MSU head coach Tom Saxton said." I like that we are able to score goals, we just have to be able to sustain it over 90 minutes."
Penn State took the early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute. Ally Schlegel took the Rachel Wasserman pass and deposited it to the lower right corner.
The Spartans scored the equalizer in the 27th minute. Junior forward Gia Wahlberg scored her second goal of the season from nine yards out. Dribbling down field alone, Wahlberg beat Nittany Lion goalkeeper Katie Evans with a blast in the middle of the goal to tie the score.
Before the half ended, Penn State re-took the lead, 2-1, in the 35th minute. Frankie Tagliaferri beat sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Kozal one-on-one off the pass from Sam Coffey.
In the 74th minute, the Nittany Lions added an insurance goal by Elle Kershner.
At the end of the game, the Nittany Lions out-shot the Spartans, 16-3, including nine shots on goal. Aside from Wahlberg's goal, sophomore Sydney Kloosterm and junior Miranda Hart.
"It is important that our travel is in the state of Michigan next week. It kind of feels like we are starting the season with eight games on the road, since a neutral site isn't really a home game. What really matters now is the ability to rest and recover a little bit," Saxton said.
Michigan State continues its season-long five-game road trip. In its only match next week, the Spartans will take on in-state rival Michigan on Friday, March 12 at 11 a.m. in Brighton, Michigan.
