Sophomore forward Taiyier Parks earns a double-double in the win.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's basketball celebrated its three seniors with a 67-54 win over Wisconsin Saturday afternoon at the Breslin Center.
After the game, the Spartans honored Mardrekia Cook, Claire Hendrickson and Laurel Jacqmain in a ceremony. With parents in the stands, video tributes for all three seniors were played in a very different Senio Day ceremony.
With the win, Michigan State ends the regular season 13-7 and 8-7 in Big Ten play, while Wisconsin stands 5-18 and 2-18.
For the second-straight game, sophomore forward Taiyier Parks led the team in scoring with her second double-double of the season. She scored 14 points with 11 rebounds, while adding two steals. Sophomore guard Alyza Winston also scored 14 points, while junior guard Tory Ozment added 10. Senior forward Alisia Smith had a MSU career-high 14 rebounds to pace the Spartans.
Hendrickson, playing in her first game of the season, drained a three for MSU's first points of the game. The Spartan offense struggled to get going early on with Wisconsin taking the 12-11 lead with two minutes left in the first quarter. Despite the chilly start, MSU led after the first period 14-12.
Michigan State used a 7-0 run to open up a 21-13 lead in the first three minutes of the second quarter. Wisconsin called a timeout after sophomore guard Moira Joiner's smooth pass found Ozment to give MSU its first double digit lead of the game 25-15 with 5:53 remaining in the half. The Badgers responded with a 6-0 run to trim the MSU lead to 25-21, but the Spartans were able to end the half with a 6-0 run to enter the locker room with a 33-23 lead.
Wisconsin scored the first six points of the second half, leading to a MSU timeout. Winston ignited the Spartans' offense with back-to-back 3-pointers. The Badgers were able to get as close as four points in the quarter, but MSU was able to re-take the double-digit advantage heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Spartans continued to maintain their double digit lead, taking as big a lead as 16 points. Winston provided much of the fourth-quarter offense with seven points in the final 10 minutes. In the final minutes of the game, Cook, Hendrickson and Jacqmain were able to honor the MSU tradition of kissing the Spartan head.
Michigan State will now await the unveiling of the 2021 Big Ten Tournament Bracket.
