
Spartan Women’s Tennis Stops Indiana on Senior Day, 5-2

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Honoring their seniors in their final home match, the Spartans women's tennis team dominated Indiana, 5-2, on Sunday on Senior Day at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
Michigan State has now won two-straight games to improve to 6-10 overall and 6-9 in Big Ten action, Indiana falls to 1-15 this season.
"I am so proud of this team, and I am so proud of these seniors. It is always fun to get a win outdoors and on Senior Day. We don't always think we are having the best season, but we still have six wins in the Big Ten, and we still have a lot of tennis to look forward to," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said.
Prior to the match, the Spartans honored their three seniors Kate Harvey, Samantha Memije and Caroline Szabo.
With wins in doubles and singles, Memije now has 58 singles and 58 doubles wins. The 58 doubles wins put her tied for sixth all-time at Michigan State with Tracy Balagna (1983-87) and Caroline Lay (2000-04).
For the second-straight match, Michigan State started things on the right foot, capturing the doubles point. On court two, Memije and junior Nicole Stephens made quick work of Caitlin Bernard and Alexandra Staiculescu, 6-0. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead with a win on court No. 3. Junior Lauren Lemonds and freshman Ayshe Can shut out Laura Masic and Sayda Hernandez, 6-0.
In singles play, Memije won her second match on Senior Day with a win at No. 3 singles over Staiculescu, 6-1, 6-1. Michigan State jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a win on court No. 4. Junior Maja Pietrowicz upended Jelly Bozovic, 6-0, 6-3.
Indiana then won matches at No. 6 and No. 5 to make it a 3-2 contest with two matches remaining. For the second-straight match, Lemonds clinched the match for Michigan State at the No. 2 singles spot. Lemonds captured the first set, 6-2 over IU's Annabelle Andrinopoulos. In the second set tiebreaker, she battled to a 7-5 win. At the No. 1 position, senior Mary Lewis closed out the match with a three-set win, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 over Masic.
Michigan State will conclude the regular season next week at Michigan on Sunday, April 18 at 2 p.m.
