Farquhar blasts first home run of Spartan career; MSU splits four-game weekend pod.
MSU split the extended weekend action going 2-2, splitting the pair of two-game series with Purdue and Penn State. The Spartans are now an even 11-11 on the season, while the Boilermakers are 6-15 after also splitting the weekend series.Â
Purdue jumped out to a 3-0 after two innings, adding one more in the fourth and three more in the fifth for a 7-0 lead, before MSU got on the board in the sixth on freshman infielder Trent Farquhar's solo home run for his first round-tripper of his Spartan career. The Boilermakers tacked on a run in the top of the seventh, before the Spartans plated a run of their own in the home half of the inning. Both teams' rallies could have been extended but were halted, leaving the bases loaded in both the top and the bottom of the frame.
The Spartans again threatened in the eighth, getting their first two batters on, but a double play and strikeout snuffed out the rally, and MSU got a runner on in the ninth on a two-out walk, but nothing else going to end the game.
"Credit Purdue, they made plays when they needed to make plays. I think they took advantage of a lot of opportunities that we gave them and that's the name of the game," MSU head coach Jake Boss Jr. said. "So credit them, we had some opportunities and didn't take advantage of them, and they had opportunities and did, and at the end of the day, that's what it takes to win. It's just kind of disappointing though, I thought we had some chances, both offensively and defensively, on the mound and on the bases, and just didn't play well enough to win."
Farquhar was 2-for-5, knocking in both runs and scoring one, blasting his solo home run down the right field line and into the Red Cedar River in the sixth, and roping a double down the same right field line in the seventh, driving in junior infielder Zach Iverson, who led off the inning with a single. Iverson ended 2-for-4 with a run scored, while senior outfielder Bryce Kelley, freshman designated hitter Jack Frank and redshirt-freshman catcher Gabe Sotres were all 1-for-4, while senior outfielder Joe Stewart was 1-for-3.
Junior pitcher Jesse Heikkinen made his season-debut on the mound for the Spartans after missing the previous portion of the season with an injury. Heikkinen started and threw the first two innings, before sophomore Jackson Bennett made his Michigan State debut, also missing the first part of the season with an injury. Freshmen Adam Berghorst, Nick Smith and Zach Hopman also saw action on the mound.
Purdue got on the board in the top of the opening frame, scoring a run without a hit, as leadoff hitter Skyler Hunter walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, to third on a wild pitch and scored on a sac fly.
The visiting Boilermakers added two runs in the second stanza, boosted by a pair of doubles, and tacked on a run in the fourth and three in the fifth, with a big blow coming on a two-run home run by Ben Nisle, to open a 7-0 lead.
MSU got on the board in the bottom of the sixth, as Farquhar smacked the first home run of his Spartan career, blasting a shot down the right field line and into the Red Cedar River. Stewart and Frank followed with singles, chasing Purdue starter Cory Brooks. New Boilermaker pitcher Eric Hildebrand ended the Spartan rally with a popup and groundout, leaving two Spartans on the bases and the score 7-1.
Purdue added a run in the top of the seventh on a bases loaded sacrifice fly, before Hopman came on and after a walk to re-load the bases, got out of the jam to leave them loaded and an 8-1 score.
After the stretch, Iverson led off with a single and Sotres followed with a single. After a double play wiped out Sotres from the basepaths and moved Iverson to third, Farquhar smacked his double down the line in right to drive in Iverson.Â
Kelley reached on an error, then stole second, adding to his school record total, now with 81 career stolen bases, after breaking the MSU career record in Sunday's game. Stewart was up next and drew a walk to load the bases full of Spartans, but a groundout ended the inning, and the scoring.
Michigan State heads to Champaign, Illinois for a second-straight pod weekend this weekend, Friday-Sunday, April 16-18, playing Illinois and facing off with Purdue again. The Spartans open the weekend against the Illini on Friday at 7 p.m. ET/6 p.m. CT, then play a split doubleheader on Saturday, facing Illinois at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT, before battling Purdue at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT. MSU wraps up the weekend on Sunday against Purdue at 1 p.m. ET/12 p.m. CT. The schedule is subject to change.
