
Spartans Fall at No. 22 Michigan

Michigan State dropped a 6-1 decision at No. 22 Michigan on Wednesday, the first of two makeup dates between the teams after a cancelation of the four-game series at the beginning of the month. The Spartans fall to 7-14, and Michigan is now 17-4.Â

Marissa Trivelpiece scored the first run of the 2021 season at Michigan's Alumni Field when she hit a solo homer over the wall in right field to give the Spartans a 1-0 lead. Â An inside-the-park home run gave Michigan a 2-1 lead in the home half of the same frame, as Haley Hoogenraad picked up her first of the season.

Michigan got to Ladd again in the fourth, when Julia Jiminez singled to lead off the inning and Hannah Carson followed with a double into right center to score the runner and make it a 3-1 ballgame. Ladd also surrendered a single run in the fifth on an RBI single to Lou Allan.

The Wolverines tacked on two more (both unearned) in the bottom of the sixth against freshman Jala Wright, who pitched the frame for MSU. Ladd went five full innings and struck out seven, and Wright gave up two base hits and struck out two.Â

Meghan Beaubien started for the Wolverines and went three innings, strking out five and surrendering the homer to Trivelpiece. Alex Storako came on to throw the final four innings and picked up the victory (11-2), striking out nine.Â

Michigan State opens up an eight-game homestand against Penn State on Friday at 4 pm.Â

- Marissa Trivelpiece put MSU on the board in the top of the second inning, smacking a homer over the wall in right field. Â
- Haley Hoogenraad hit an inside-the-park homer in the bottom half that gave Michigan a 2-1 lead. She popped a ball near the right field line, and the ball was lost in the sun, and took a funny bounce to allow Hoogenraad to beat the eventual throw home.Â
- Michigan made a pitching change in the top of the fourth, bringing on Alex StorakoÂ

- A leadoff single by Lauren Esman and a walk led to a one-out RBI single to right by Lou Allan which made it 4-1 in the bottom of the fifth.Â
- Michigan had another multiple-run inning in the sixth. Lexi Voss hit a one-out double to center and an error allowed Hoogenraad to reach, moving Voss to third. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, scoring Voss. Lexi Blair singled down the right field line, scoring Hoogenraad and giving her team a 6-1 lead.Â
- Jala Wright entered for Sarah Ladd in the sixth. Ladd tossed five innings, scattering six hits and striking out seven, surrendering four runs.Â
- Alex Storako struck out nine in four relief innings without surrendering a hit, picking up her 11th win of the season. MSU had three base hits in three innings against Meaghan Beaubien.Â
