Plata Ties for First as Spartans Take Third at the Indiana Invitational

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Michigan State women's golf team shot the lowest score of any team in the final round of the Indiana Invitational on Sunday at 3-under-par 285, helping the Spartans to a third-place finish. In a tournament at featured all 14 Big Ten Teams as well as No. 17 Kent State in a play six, count four format, the Spartans finished 6-over-par 870 (292-293-285), which put them four shots behind second place and No. 19 Maryland. Kent State won the team title at 8-under-par 856.

"Like Coach Izzo's teams, you have to play your best when it matters at the end of the season and that's our goal, too," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "I feel like we have been playing well and it's the right time. This weekend helped us understand that we can play with anyone in our conference and anyone in the country."
Valery Plata finished in a three-way tie for first place individually at 4-under-par 212 (69-73-70) at the Pfau Course. It marked the first time this season and second time in her career Plata has garnered medalist honors.
"Valery was awesome, she played so great," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "She struggled a little toward the end of the front nine, but then was so good on the back."
On the way to her 2-under-par 70 on Sunday, Plata recorded three birdies and six pars on the back nine.
Two birdies to end the day helped Paz Marfa Sans shoot a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday to finish the tournament 1-over-par 217 (73-73-71) and in a tie for eighth place. It marked the second time in the last two tournaments Marfa Sans placed in the top 10.
"For Paz this whole year is such a blessing," Slobodnik-Stoll said. "It's a special opportunity for her this year and she wants to make the most of it."
Yurika Tanida (76-76-72) and Valentina Rossi (76-73-75) both tied for 29th place at 8-over-par 224. Tanida was 2-over-par at the turn on Sunday then picked up two shots on the back nine with a pair of birdies to card an even-par 72 – her best round of the tournament. Rossi shot a 3-over-par 75 on Sunday.
Haylin Harris (74-79-72) and Leila Raines (77-74-74) tied for 32nd place at 9-over-par 225. Harris shot an even-par 72 on Sunday, which was her best round of the tournament. Raines carded her second straight 2-over-par 74.
Next week's Big Ten Championships will take place April 23-25 at TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio.
