Spartan Women's Tennis Begins Big Ten Tournament Thursday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis begins action in the Big Ten Women's Tennis Tournament on Thursday, April 29 against host Wisconsin at 4 p.m. at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The No. 9-seeded Spartans will take on the No. 8-seeded Badgers in the second round. It is scheduled to be the third of four matches on the day. Michigan State ended the regular season 6-11 overall and 6-10 in Big Ten action. Wisconsin ended the regular season with an 8-10 record. This will be the first meeting this season between the Spartans and the Badgers.
Wisconsin holds an overall series lead over Michigan State 44-13. The last time the two teams met on March 22, 2019, the Badgers came out on top, 4-0.
Ohio State is the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament and will take on the winner of the match between MSU and Wisconsin on Friday, April 30. No. 2 Michigan is set to face the winner of the matchup between No. 7 Illinois and No. 10 Purdue. Northwestern is the No. 3 seed, while Iowa holds the No. 4 seed.
The Spartans are looking for their first win in the Big Ten Tournament since defeating Indiana, 4-2, on April 26, 2018, 4-2, in Minneapolis.
With a doubles win against No. 20 Michigan on April 18, graduate student Samantha Memije now has 59 doubles wins, which puts her alone in sixth all-time at Michigan State.
Junior Lauren Lemonds was the first Spartan to reach double-figure wins, standing 10-6 in dual-match action this season. She has won two-straight matches, clinching wins against Illinois and Indiana. The doubles team of senior Mary Lewis and junior Maja Pietrowicz has won three-straight matches, holding an overall record of 7-3 this season as a pair and now holds an ITA ranking of No. 82.
