Spartan Women’s Tennis Advances in B1G Tournament with a Win Over Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. - No. 9-seeded Michigan State women's tennis advances to the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament with a dominating 4-1 win over No. 8 seed and host Wisconsin on Thursday in Madison, Wisconsin.
After the first two matches of the day were played outside, the Spartans' match was moved to the indoor facility.
Michigan State started fast earning the doubles point for the fourth-straight match. The No. 82-ranked team of senior Mary Lewis and junior Maja Pietrowicz defeated Anna Makarova and Charmaine Seah, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot. MSU clinched the double point at the No. 3 spot. Freshman Ayshe Can and junior Lauren Lemonds doubled up Nastasya Semenovski and Christina Zordani, 6-3
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead at No. 3 singles when graduate student Samantha Memije defeated Anna Makarova in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4. Lewis soon followed with another straight set win at the No. 1 position over Ava Markham, 7-5, 6-3 to increase the MSU lead to 3-0.
Wisconsin cut the Michigan State advantage to 3-1 with a win on court No. 2. Antonela Stoica battled to defeat Lemonds, 7-6, 6-3. Looking to clinch the match, the Spartans turned to junior Nicole Stephens. At the No. 6 position, the junior dropped the first set to Jordana Ossa, 2-6. Stephens rebounded to win the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5 to secure the Spartan victory.
Michigan State is looking for its first win in the Big Ten Tournament since defeating Indiana, 4-2, on April 26, 2018, 4-2, in Minneapolis.
With the win, the Spartans improve to 7-11 overall this season.
Michigan State now takes on No. 1 seeded-Ohio State on Friday, April 30 at 4 p.m. ET. The Buckeyes won the two regular-season meetings this year by matching 6-1 scores.
