SCOTTSDALE, Arizona – The Michigan State women's golf team shot a 6-over-par 294 on day two of the NCAA Championships on Saturday at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. In cutting seven shots off their opening-round score, the Spartans moved up two spots and into a tie for 12th place at 19-over-par 595 (301-294). Stanford leads the 24-team field at 7-under-par 569, followed by Duke at 3-under-par 573.
Following Sunday's third round, the top 15 teams will advance to the fourth and final round of stroke play.
"I think we definitely performed better today. We played the last few holes five-under-par, so they played well coming in which is exciting," MSU head coach Stacy Slobodnik-Stoll said. "Now, we'll get ready to get after it tomorrow."
Valery Plata was one of three Spartans to register a pair of birdies over the final three holes and led the way for MSU for the second straight day. Plata recorded her second even-par 72 of the tournament and stands in a tie for 11th place at even-par 144. The junior was 2-over-par through 10 holes, but settled in and recorded five consecutive pars before birdying two of the last three holes.
Yurika Tanida cut two strokes off her opening-round score as she shot a 2-over-par 74 on Saturday. Like Plata, Tanida also birdied holes No. 7 and 9 to end the day. Tanida is 6-over-par 150 and tied for 61st place.
Haylin Harris is also 6-over-par 150 after shooting her second consecutive 3-over-par 75. She was 5-over-par with three holes to play, but was able to birdie No. 7 and 8, then parred No. 9 to end the day.
"It was a grid," Harris said "I wasn't doing anything too special the whole round. It was really windy, so that was a huge factor. I kind of had the feeling coming down to the last couple of holes that my score might count just because of how hard (the course) was playing, so I wanted to have a strong finish and was able to make a few good putts."
Freshman Valentina Rossi saw her first action of the weekend and shot the second-best score of the day among Spartans with a 1-over-par 73. Rossi proved consistent all day as she recorded 15 pars.
Paz Marfa Sans shot a 10-over-par 82 and is 16-over-par 160 for the tournament.
Stanford's Rachel Heck leads the field at 8-under-par 136.
Michigan State will be paired with ninth-place Arizona and 11th-place, and host, Arizona State on Sunday and tee off between 10:36-11:20 a.m. ET.
