Beadlescomb is the second Spartan to earned first-team All-America honors in the NCAA Championships.
EUGENE, Ore. - Morgan Beadlescomb smashed the Michigan State track & field record in the 5000m en route to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Championships at Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon on Friday.
Beadlescomb finished with a time of 13:21.40, while Oregon's Cooper Teare won with a meet record time of 13:12.27. Beadlescomb was with the main pack for the majority of the race before the front of the pack broke away in the final lap.
His previous school record in the 5000m was 13:40.43 set earlier this season at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Florida.
"The plan was established with him and Coach (Aaron) Simoneau was if it went out honest was to establish a position and be as calm as possible. And that was pretty much what happened," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "Running this fast was a new experience and a new level of stress being at the NCAA meet. We thought that he did a great job of staying calm and competing. He finished eighth was a first team All-American and earned a trial standard in a super competitive year. Anytime it is an Olympic trials year, everything just ramps up. He did a nice job of managing those elements."
This was Beadlescomb's second outdoor All-America honor after capturing second-team honors in 2019 by finishing 13th. Prior to Beadlescomb the last Spartan to earn All-America honors in the 5,000m was Caleb Rhynard in 2013. He also earned first-team All-America honors during indoor season with a third-place finish in the 5000m.
The 2021 NCAA Championships will come to a close on Saturday. The only Michigan State athlete in action is Big Ten Champion Jenna Magness who will compete in the 5000m at 7:55 p.m. ET.
Men's Meet Recap
Wade Walder, Decathlon | Second-Team All-America | Ninth Place
"If we had a team of guys like Wade we would a really phenomenal team. No matter what he is up against he is going to put himself out there and do his best. To have such a successful second day and finish ninth just speaks to the work that he has put in and the mindset that he has to make decisions and be competitive," Breznau said.
Trevor Stephenson, Pole Vault | Second-Team All-America | 13h Place
"Trevor was able to be a second-team All-American in his first year is a great sign of a really bright future. Coach (Ceith) Creekmur is a really great coach and really gets them ready to compete on this stage. I think was such a great learning experience for Trevor, managing the emotion experience steady," Breznau said.
