Magness broke the school record with a time of 15:32.91.
EUGENE, Ore. - Jenna Magness broke a six-year old Michigan State record as she battled to a fourth-place in finish on the final day of the NCAA Championships at Heyward Field in Eugene, Oregon on Saturday.
Magness crossed the line with a time of 15:32.91, smashing the Michigan State school record which was held by Spartan All-American Rachele Schulist with a time of 15:36.33 in 2015. The junior's previous personal best was 15:38.82 at the Big Ten Championships in May.
N.C. State's Elly Henes took the title with a time of 15:28.05. Much like Morgan Beadlescomb a night earlier, Magness was amongst the top pack much of the race. In the final few meters, she was able to kick it into high gear to reach fourth place.
"There were definitely a chills at the finish for me, especially with how she finished the last 100 meters with how many people she passed. It was just a phenomenal run and a fantastic fun and a school record. It was a nice ending with lots of excitement from everyone for Jenna," Interim Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Lisa Breznau said. "It is testament to the work that she has put in, especially through this type of year. Emily MacLeod was a stud here, so to finish close to the ranks of Emily is a sign of where Jenna is."
Magness had the best finish in the 5000m in an NCAA Championship by a Spartan since Emily MacLeod finished seventh in 2011.
This caps off a banner season for Magness who won a team Big Ten Championship in cross country and captured individual Big Ten titles in the 5000m during both the indoor and outdoor season. She also earned first-team All-American honors in the 5000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships by finishing seventh.Â
USC's women won the championship with 74 points, while MSU was tied for 44th with 5.5. On the men's side LSU won with 84 points, while the Spartans were tied for 62nd with one point.Â
Women's Meet Recap
Sophia Franklin, Pole Vault | First-Team All-America | Eighth Place
"It has been so fun to watch Sophia grow and build her confidence. We named her captain and that has helped her grow as a complete person and that has been reflected in how she has competed throughout the entire year. She was a completely different woman than in 2018 because she has the experience and more confidence," Breznau said.
Lynsie Gram and India Johnson, 10,000m | Honorable Mention All-American
Sarah Anderson, 1500m | Semifinalist
"For all three of these women it has been a breakthrough year every step of the way. Sarah has kept PR'ing every meet that she has raced this season, that sort of sequence is rare but she's put in the work. Lynsie and India have stepped up as leaders and have been able to do some phenomenal things all throughout the year, and to end the year at the NCAAs is such a great learning experience. I am proud of the year that all of them have had," Breznau said.
