Michigan State Men’s Soccer Falls to No. 24 Tulsa Saturday

Tulsa, Okla. -- Spartan men's soccer couldn't overcome a fast start by No. 24 Tulsa, as the Golden Hurricane stopped MSU, 5-1, Saturday night at the Hurricane Soccer & Track Stadium.
"It was a tough result. I don't think the score was indicative of how we played, but certainly Tulsa is a very good team. We can't give up this many goals," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "It was a tough start giving up two quick goals. I thought that the team really responded. We got the game to 2-1, and we were really starting to find a rhythm. Then we got beaten on the counter and that penalty kick was a tough one and kind of broke us."
The Golden Hurricane jumped on the board first in the fourth minute when Alex Meinhard cut through the Spartan defense for the unassisted goal. Tulsa made it a 2-0 game in the 10th minute, when Ben Barkley found Malik Henry-Scott for his third goal of the season.
In the 19th minute, the Spartans got on the board. Senior midfielder Jack Beck's cornerkick found the head of Luke Morrell, who headed into the net to make it a 2-1 game. The shot was the first of the game for Michigan State. With his first goal of the season, Morrell was the sixth Spartan of the season to find the back of the net.
In the 32nd minute, junior Conner George took down a Golden Hurricane player in the box, leading to a penalty kick. Meinhard earned his second goal of the game, as Tulsa took a 3-1 lead. The Hurricane added one more before the half ended.
Michigan State came out fast in the second half with shots on goal by freshman midfielder Jacob Cromer and senior forward Farai Mutatu.
The Spartan defense tightened up in the second half with freshman goalkeeper Lance McGrane taking over in goal. Michigan State kept Tulsa off the scoreboard until the 83rd minute. Takayoshi Wyatt took a pass from Henry Sach and Til Zinnhardt to make it a 5-1 game.
Michigan State continues its three-game road trip at regional rival Notre Dame on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m.
