Spartan Men's Soccer Returns Home to Host Duquesne Tuesday

MSU opens a three-game homestand.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - After a treacherous three-game road trip, the Michigan State men's soccer returns home to the friendly confines of DeMartin Stadium to take on Duquesne on Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m.
The Spartans had a 1-0-1 week last week with a win against Notre Dame and a tie in the Big Ten opener against Wisconsin. Overall, MSU stands 3-3-1 this season. The Dukes won their A-10 opener against George Washington and are 5-2 this year.
PLAY THE BEST TO BE THE BEST
Through the first seven games of the season, Michigan State has the 19th-toughest schedule in the nation. It is the second-toughest in the Big Ten behind Michigan at No. 11.
PACKING THE STANDS
Michigan State has been thrilled to have fans back at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans are No. 14 in the country in attendance, averaging 1,698 fans. Only Maryland is averaging more fans with 3,349 per game.
BIG TEN DEBUT
With the tie at Wisconsin on Sept. 17, the Spartans are 6-1-2 in their last nine Big Ten openers. After taking on Rutgers in the Big Ten opener the last four seasons, MSU faced Badgers. In last season's Big Ten opener, MSU fell to the Scarlet Knights, 2-0.
LOCAL KIDS DO GOOD
Tuesday's win against Notre Dame showcased two players from near East Lansing. Seniors Farai Mutatu (Haslett) and Jack Beck (DeWitt) scored all four goals for MSU with Mutatu scoring three and Beck adding one. Beck also added assists on Mutatu's final two goals.
Mutatu's hat trick was the first by a Spartan since Jay Chapman against No. 16 Indiana on Oct. 28, 2012. Senior midfielder Jack Beck also added a goal and two assists in the win.
AROUND THE LEAGUE
Senior Farai Mutatu is second in the Big Ten in goals scored with four, as well as standing first in points with nine. Senior Jack Beck is first in the league in assists with five. Beck had three assists last week with two against Notre Dame and one against Wisconsin on freshman defender Josh Adam's first career goal.
LOOKING AT THE DUKES
Michigan State leads the overall series with Duquesne, 2-0-1. The series is brief and the teams have not me in over a decade. The last time the two teams battled was in 2010 when MSU came away with a 2-1 win on the road. The Spartans are 1-0-1 against DU at DeMartin Stadium.
Duquesne is out to a fast start this season with a 5-2-0 record. Last time out, the Dukes came from behind to defeat George Washington in their Atlantic 10 opener, 2-1, on Saturday. DU's two losses have come on the road to nationally ranked Power 5 teams (at then-No. 3 Pitt and at then-No. 17 Kentucky).
DU's 17 goal total has more than tripled the team's total (5) in its seven 2021 spring season. Maxi Hopfer leads the team with 14 points including braces vs. both Saint Francis and Canisius.
LAST TIME OUT
In its Big Ten opener, the Michigan State men's soccer team battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie at Wisconsin Friday night at Dan McClimon Memorial Track/Soccer Complex.
Freshman defender Josh Adam scored the Spartans only goal in the 25th minute. Senior midfielder Jack Beck provided a beautiful service off a corner kick. Beck found the head of Adam for his first collegiate goal. Beck now has a team-leading five assists this season.
FINDING THE BACK OF THE NET
So far this season, eigth different Spartans have found the back of the net. Against Wisconsin, freshman defender Josh Adam scored his first collegiate goal. Senior Farai Mutatu leads the team in scoring with four goals and one assist for nine points. Fellow senior Michael Miller is second in goals scored with two.
MILLER TIME
Prior to this season, senior midfielder Michael Miller had scored two goals in 56 games at MSU. In the first seven games this year, he already scored two, including the game-winning goal against Cleveland State on Aug. 26.
UP NEXT
The Spartans continue their homestand, facing No. 11 Indiana on Sunday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m. on Alumni Day. MSU will then the homestand, hosting Penn State on Friday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.

He has started 27 games in goal for MSU with three career shutouts. Farai Mutatu earned second-team All-Big Ten honors after the spring 2021 season. After battling injuries much of the year, he ended the season with one goal.
