Omania Earns USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Following last week's championship series victory at the USA Senior World Team Trials in Lincoln, Nebraska, redshirt sophomore Peyton Omania of the Michigan State wrestling team was named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Saturday evening.

Omania, a 2019 Junior World bronze medalist and 2021 NCAA Championship qualifier, was seeded sixth in the Greco-Roman 67-kg weight class. He used a pair of 9-0 technical fall victories last Saturday to advance to Sunday's final, defeating Hayden Tuma and 2016 Olympian Jesse Thielke.

The Concord, California native drew 2020 Olympian Alejandro Sancho in the championship, sweeping the best-of-three series with 6-3 and 3-2 wins. The victory clinched Omania's first selection to the USA Senior World Team, giving him the chance to compete for his country at the Senior World Championships next month in Oslo, Norway.

Each week, USA Wrestling selects an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee considers any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
