EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State head women's basketball coach Suzy Merchant will earn the inaugural Community Impact Award by the Davies Project on Thursday for her continued work with the EmpowHER Retreat.
The Community Impact Award is an honor bestowed upon a community member who is a champion for children in the Greater Lansing Region. This recipient is considered a partner in the effort to provide our children the tools they need to be able to reach their full potential.Â
The Davies Project (TDP) is a Lansing-based non-profit that provides free non-emergent transportation and resources for families with seriously ill children to get them to their medical appointments. TDP also transports expecting mothers to their prenatal appointments, and parents to the neo-natal intensive care unit.
Merchant has been active in the Lansing community since her arrival in 2007. She has been an Honorary Chair for numerous events, including Ele's Place, Sparrow Foundation's Hike for Hospice, Women Working Wonders, MSU Children's Health Initiative, Women's Center of Lansing, Haven House, Ronald McDonald House, Advent House Ministries, Old Newsboys' Shoe and Coat Drive, and Muscular Dystrophy Association.Â
In 2016, Merchant helped create the EmpowHER Retreat. EmpowHER is designed to build confidence in girls by providing interactive workshops concentrated on the importance of self-empowerment, confidence, health and wellness and relationship building. In 2018, Merchant was honored with the ATHENA Leadership Award by the Lansing Regional Chamber of Commerce. The award honors individuals who strive towards the highest levels of professional accomplishment, who excel in their chosen field, have devoted time and energy to their community, and who pave paths for other women to follow.
