EAST LANSING – Michigan State head coach Danton Cole has announced the team captains for the upcoming season. Senior Dennis Cesana has been elected team captain, while Mitchell Lewandowski and Josh Nodler were voted assistant captains. Additionally, seniors Cole Krygier, Christian Krygier, Adam Goodsir and Mitchell Mattson will serve as assistant captains on a rotating basis throughout the season.
"Leadership is a strength of this team and the seniors we have in this leadership group along with Junior Josh Nodler will set the tone on and off the ice," said Cole. "As a group, they follow in the footsteps of many great leaders here in Spartan Hockey."
Cesana was an All-Big Ten honorable mention selection a year ago and also wore an 'A' as an assistant captain. The native of Providence, Rhode Island had a team-high 10 assists last season and produced a total of 12 points. In 99-career games, Cesana has 12 goals and 46 assists for 58 points.
Cesana was voted to the Big Ten All-Freshman team as a rookie and was an All-Big Ten second team selection as a sophomore. The defenseman is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree.
Lewandowski is back for a fifth season, taking advantage of the extra year awarded by the NCAA due to COVID-19. In 105-career games, Lewandowski has 101 points, which is the sixth-highest total among active players in the NCAA. Lewandowski is one goal shy of 50 for his career and has 52 assists.
Lewandowski, who was an assistant captain last season, is a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention selection and was the 2018 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
For Nodler, it will be his first time as a Spartan wearing a letter. The junior from Oak Park had a career-best 11 points (3g, 8a) last season and appeared in every game for the second straight year. He was voted the team's rookie of the year in 2020 and won the Amo Bessone Award, honoring athletic and academic achievement and community involvement last season.
Nodler is a 2019 pick (150th overall) of the Calgary Flames.
Cole Krygier has skated in 87 career games entering his senior season, having racked up 14 points, including six goals and eight assists. Christian Krygier is a two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree and has played in 94 games for the Green and White. Last season, Christian Kryiger was an AHCA/Krampade All-American Scholar as well as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar.
Goodsir and Mattson were both AHCA/Krampade All-American Scholars; Big Ten Distinguished Scholars; and Academic All-Big Ten selections in 2020-21. Goodsir, who hails from Okemos, has appeared in 95 games for the Spartans through his first three seasons. Mattson, a native of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, had a career-high four points last season and has skated in a total of 57 games.
Michigan State opens the 2021-22 season at Munn Ice Arena, Oct. 8-9, against Air Force.
