NOTES TO KNOW:
• For the second straight week, Michigan State holds the No. 1 spot in the NPI, the USA Hockey Poll and the USCHO.com poll. MSU has not been ranked lower than No. 4 in either voted-on poll this season.
• Coming off a bye week, the Spartans split their last series with Michigan on Feb. 6-7, winning 5-2 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, but falling 4-3 in overtime in Ann Arbor. Michigan State held a 3-1 advantage going into the third period in game one at Yost, and nearly overcame an overtime penalty before Michigan scored the game-winning goal. MSU got out to a 4-0 lead over Michigan through two periods at the "Duel in the D". Senior Charlie Stramel scored in each game to finish the series with three points (2-1-3).
• The Spartans are 10-4-0 against ranked opponents this season. All ranked opponents on MSU's schedule to date have been ranked in the Top 10. Michgan State has played in six Top 5-ranked series'. Other MSU opponents, New Hampshire and Michigan Tech have made later appearances in the rankings.
• This is MSU's second series against the Irish this season after sweeping Notre Dame in South Bend on November 14-15. Freshman Porter Martone scored three goals in the series and junior goaltender Trey Augustine posted a 1.01 GAA on a .963 save percentage.
• Michigan State's top line forwards Daniel Russell - Charlie Stramel - Porter Martone have generated 107 points this season on 44 goals and 63 assists, and are a combined +78 on the ice with Stramel leading with a +28 to Russell's +27 and Martone's +23.
• Since January 1, the Russell-Stramel-Martone line has posted 47 points in 10 games (19g-28a-47p). Martone and Russell lead the team with 16 points in that span while Stramel has tallied 15. Freshman forwards Ryker Lee and Anthony Romani each posted 9 points over their last 10 games.
• Stramel has set a career-best in single season points with 38 (18g-20a-38p) this season, topping his 27 from his junior campaign in just 21 games (set 1/15 at Wisconsin).
• Stramel is #4 nationally in face-off wins (357), #27 in assists per game (0.71), #9 in goals per game (0.64) and #7 in points per game (1.36). His seven game-winning goals this season are tied for the national lead.
• Martone ranks #12 nationally in goals per game (0.62) and #17 in assists per game (0.77), making him #4 in points per game (1.38) to rank second on the team in points with 36 (16g-20a-36p).
• Martone needs three more points to break into the program Top 10 for freshman points (Mike York '95-'96, 39) and one more goal to break into the program Top 10 for freshman goals (Tim Crowder '05-'06; David Booth '02-'03; Rob Woodward '89-'90, 17).
• Russell ranks #11 nationally in assists per game (0.82) and #19 in points per game (1.18). He's fifth among active skaters in career points (113).
• Junior goaltender Trey Augustine is among the best in the country ranking #5 in shutouts (3), #5 in goals against average (1.96) and #5 in save percentage (.932). Augustine leads all active goaltenders in career wins (62) and has played in 14 less games than the #2 goaltender.
• Augustine was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Mike Richter Award, presented annually to the top goaltender in NCAA men's Division I hockey. Augustine is the only three-time semifinalist this season and is one of four repeat semifinalists from last season. Among semifinalists, Augustine ranks 3rd in both Sv% (.932) and GAA (1.96).
• Michigan State ranks #2 nationally in scoring defense (1.96), #8 in scoring offense (3.68) and #3 in scoring margin (+1.71). MSU leads the Big Ten in scoring defense and is third in scoring offense.
