Michigan State Ends Homestand with Loss to Bowling Green
9/6/2021 5:31:00 PM | Men's Soccer
East Lansing, Mich. -- Michigan State men's soccer was beaten by visiting Bowling Green, 3-0, Monday afternoon at a sun-bathed DeMartin Stadium.
"I thought that Bowling Green was up for it from start to finish. I think us as coaches have to take responsibility for this. I didn't have these guys ready to go; the leaders didn't have these guys ready to go," MSU head coach Damon Rensing said. "We were second best on everything on the day. We just have to defend better in critical moments. I am disappointed that we didn't put two together back-to-back after the Oakland win on Friday."
MSU levels its record at 2-2, while visiting BGSU improves to 3-0-1. Monday's loss also snaps the Spartans' seven-match win streak and 17-match unbeaten streak in the series with the Falcons, as MSU still holds a 24-17-6 series advantage. After the previous six matches were decided by one goal, the last two matches have been 3-0 scores, as MSU beat BGSU, 3-0 in the last meeting in 2018.
The Spartans had their chances, out-shooting the Falcons, 10-8, but BGSU made the most of its opportunities with a 5-3 shots on goals edge.
Maintaining possession for much of the first half, the Falcons finally broke through in the 36th minute. Jacob Erlandson scored his first goal of the season off the pass from Kyle Cusimano. Erlandson's chip shot bounced off the post and slipped past MSU goalkeeper Hunter Morse. Bowling Green took the 1-0 lead into half time.
In the second half, the teams exchanged blows early on, but Bowling Green held on to the 1-0 lead.
The Falcons broke it open in the 61st minute with a goal by Cusimano. Bowling Green scored its final goal in the 75th minute. Roberto Fernandez Garrido took the Cusimano ball from the left side and finished to the lower right corner to seal the win.
With their four-game homestand complete, the Spartans makes their first road trip of the 2021 season, heading to Tulsa to take on the Golden Hurricane on Friday, Sept. 10 in an 8 p.m. ET match.
