ROCHESTER, Mich. – Michigan State women's soccer earned a shutout road victory on Thursday night, defeating Oakland 2-0 to stay unbeaten at 4-0-2 on the season.
It was a night of firsts for the Spartans as Samantha White scored her first career goal and the game-winner, while Abby Gardiner recorded her first career assist. Sydney Kloosterman's goal was her first of the season.
The game-winning goal came up quick for the Green & White in the third minute of the match. Gardiner set up a corner kick in Oakland territory for White, who was ready on the left side of the goal to send a long header into the back of the net. White has already put in work this season on defense, having started in all six contests and spent over 400 minutes on the field.
The Spartans kept Oakland busy throughout the first frame as several members of the squad had near-successful shots. Ava Cook, Camryn Evans and Lauren DeBeau all had shots on goal. With less than a minute left to play in the half, MSU capitalized. DeBeau took a shot from the right side, guiding Oakland's goalkeeper out into the far right of the box. There to bat the ball away was Gia Wahlberg, who set up a perfect cross to Kloosterman for a header into a wide open net.
Despite a scoreless second half, the Spartans kept on their toes with strong defense to keep Oakland out of the goal column. Michigan State outshot the Golden Grizzlies 16-5 with six shots taken on goal. They took 11 corner kicks and scored their first goal of the season off a corner.
Continuing on a string of road games, the Spartans will take on Dayton on Sunday, Sept. 12. Kick-off is set for 1 p.m. and the game will be available to stream on ESPN+. Big Ten play is not far off, with the first game for MSU taking place at Indiana on Sept. 19.
