EAST LANSING, Mich. --Â Michigan State gymnast Skyla Schulte was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon.
This is Schulte's first Freshman of the Week Award, and the first for the Spartans since Baleigh Garcia won the honor in February 2021. Schulte was also named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch prior to the start of the 2022 season. This is the second year in a row that an MSU gymnast has been named Freshman of the Week in the conference's first week of awards distribution.Â
In her debut meet with the Spartans, Schulte competed in the all-around, finishing second overall with a score of 39.125. She shared the vault title with MSU's Gabrielle Stephen, posting a score of 9.875. In addition, Schulte had the third-best score on the uneven bars with a 9.700 and placed 12th on beam.
Schulte's performance helped propel the Spartans to a 195.875 victory over UC Davis and Sacramento State in the January 9 tri-meet. It was the best season-opening score in program history, topping last season's 195.775.
The Bolingbrook, Illinois native is tied for the fifth-best vault score in the conference and 16th in the nation after the opening weekend. The Spartans are now ranked No. 11 in the country.
Michigan State will host its first home meet of the season this weekend, competing in a tri-meet with Bowling Green and Illinois State on Saturday, January 15 at 7 p.m., under the Vaccination Policy for Spectators.
