EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State's redshirt senior wrestler Cameron Caffey has been named the Big Ten Wrestler of the Week after notching wins against two Top-10 opponents in a three-day span, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Â
Caffey defeated No. 6/12 Greg Bulsak in a 12-4 major decision on Friday night, a victory that ended up closing out the then-No. 21 Spartans' 20-17 dual win over No. 14 Rutgers. Caffey erased a 3-1 deficit entering the third period, securing an escape and takedown to go up 4-3 with just under a minute remaining in the match, then quickly racking up two separate four-point near-falls in 30 seconds.
Â
The 197-pounder then matched up against No. 2/2 Max Dean on Sunday in a dual meet between MSU and No. 1 Penn State. A second-period takedown by Caffey allowed him to enter the third period tied at 2-2 with Dean, where Caffey got a bout-winning escape with 34 seconds left to pick up his second ranked win of the weekend and his third ranked win in his last four matches. The win also gave Caffey seven-straight wins and four ranked victories over his last 10 bouts dating back to the Southern Scuffle.
Â
Caffey is the first Spartan to win B1G Wrestler of the Week since then-redshirt freshman Peyton Omania received the honor last season following his emotional win over Michigan 149-pounder Kanen Storr.
Â
Following the two-win weekend, the Carbondale, Illinois native is now ranked No. 10 nationally according to FloWrestling, Intermat, the Open Mat and WIN Magazine. Caffey is 21-4 on the season with a perfect 10-0 record in dual action, as the MSU co-captain has nine bonus-point victories, including six major decisions.
Â
The No. 18 Spartans return to action on Friday, Feb. 4 at Maryland, with that showdown set for 7 p.m.
