THE MINNESOTA SERIES Â Â Â
• Minnesota holds a 125-50-16 record all-time against the Spartans, including a 51-30-8 mark in games played in East Lansing.   The Spartans won five of eight  meetings between the teams in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons, but dropped all five games to Minnesota (including an overtime heartbreaker in the Big Ten Tournament) in the Covid-impacted 2020-21 campaign. Â
•  Minnesota enters the weekend with a 10-8-0 overall record and is 6-4-0 in Big Ten play.  The Gophers earned a pair of exhibition wins earlier this week, a 5-2 win last Sunday vs. St. Thomas and a 5-3 victory over the USNTDP at Marriucci Arena on Monday.  Minnesota last played a Big Ten series Dec. 3-4 at Michigan, splitting those games 5-1 and 2-6. Â
•  Bob Motzko is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Gophers, and previously was the bench boss for 13 seasons at his alma mater, St. Cloud State.  He owns a 344-237-60 mark overall in his 17 seasons as a head coach. Â

TEAM NOTESÂ Â Â
•  MSU is among the teams receiving votes in each of the last five USCHO.com polls.  This week, six of the seven Big Ten teams are ranked (Michigan, Notre Dame, Minnesota, Ohio State) or receiving votes (MSU, Penn State).  In the USA Hockey poll, Ohio State is receiving votes, but MSU and PSU are not.Â
•  The Spartans have played just three of their 10 Big Ten games at Munn Ice Arena, the most recent a Nov. 19-20 series against Wisconsin.  The Spartans are 2-1 at home in B1G play.  Overall, the Spartans have played 10 games on the road and 10 at home, and are 7-3-0 at Munn Ice Arena this season.
•  With a 7-3-0 mark at Munn Ice Arena, the Spartans have as many wins at home as MSU has earned in any of the last three seasons. MSU won seven home games in both 2018-19 and 2019-20, and just five in 2020-21. Â
•  The Spartans last had double-digit victories in their home rink in 2011-12, winning nine home games in 2013-14 and 2014-15 and eight in 2012-13 and 2017-18. Â
• Michigan State split its two Big Ten Conference series on the road in December, winning Saturday tilts after dropping the Friday games at both Penn State and Notre Dame.  MSU was 3-3 overall in December, with a pair of OT wins over No. 8 Notre Dame and No. 18 Michigan Tech.Â
•  MSU's strength of schedule ranks fifth  nationally overall, and the fourth toughest for remaining games.  The Big Ten schools occupy the top seven slots in strength of schedule rankings. Â
•  The Spartans are 7-3 in one-goal contests and 2-2 in two-goal games - and all four of those had an empty-net goal for the final margin.  Each of MSU's last six games were either one- or two-goal efforts. Â

•  MSU leads the Big Ten with 287 blocked shots (14.35 per game). Â
•  In nine of MSU's 11 wins, the game-winner has come in the third period or later.  In seven of the nine, the goal has been scored in the final seven minutes or OT, and five with four minutes or less remaining or in OT.  The latest in regulation was a 19:40 goal that capped a three-goal third period at Ferris State.  MSU's last two wins came in OT at Notre Dame and at home against Michigan Tech. Â
•  MSU has scored 21 third -period goals and two in OT, two fewer  than in the first (15) and second (10) periods combined.  MSU has surrendered its fewest goals in the third period, however - allowing 15 compared to 15 in the first and 19 in the second (and one in OT).  Overall, MSU has been outscored by a 48-50 margin this season. Â
•  The Spartans sit at 5-5-0 in the Big Ten, which is fifth (14 points).  Michigan leads the way with a 7-5-0 B1G record, but has played two more games than the rest of the field.  Minnesota, Ohio State and Notre Dame are all 6-4, and Wisconsin and Penn State are both 3-7. Â
