EAST LANSING, Mich. - Holding a 1-1 tie until the fourth quarter, Michigan State field hockey fell to No. 3 Northwestern, 3-1, at Ralph Young Field Friday afternoon.
The Spartans fall to 6-7 overall and 0-6 in the Big Ten with the loss. Northwestern moves to 11-3 and 2-3 on the season.
Michigan State and Northwestern played a back-and-forth first quarter with both teams limiting shots. Wildcats' leading scorer Bente Baekers got Northwestern on the board in the final minute of the quarter, sending the ball in on a pass from Peyton Halsey.
The Spartans responded with the game-tying goal in the 15th minute from senior forward Hannah Jarvie. The goal was Jarvie's fourth of the season, with Celina Riccardo adding her sixth assist of the season on the goal. Despite a 6-2 Northwestern shot advantage, the game remained tied, 1-1, heading into halftime.
The third quarter proved to be a defensive battle, as both MSU and Northwestern recorded four shots but failed to get on the board. Monique Jardell made three saves in goal during the quarter, while Lulu Fulton, Merel Hanssen and Riccardo recorded shots.
Northwestern added a goal from Ana Medina early in the fourth quarter to take a 2-1 lead. Despite a late push from Michigan State that included a pair of shots from Fulton, the Spartans were unable to tie the game. Northwestern recorded a third goal in the closing minutes from Halsey, taking a 3-1 lead to end the game.
Six different Spartans recorded shots in the game, including a team-high four from Fulton. Jardell made 10 saves in net, and Georgia Davies and Ellie Wheatley both recorded a defensive save.
The Spartans stay at home to host Indiana on Sunday, Oct. 16 in the team's annual pink game. Pass back is slated for noon.
