
Spartan Men Close Out Homestand against Rutgers Sunday

MSU will celebrate Title IX, celebrating women within the program.
EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's soccer completes a two-game homestand, taking on Rutgers on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at DeMartin Stadium. The Spartans will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Title IX by celebrating women within the program.
Veronica Bolanos and Miriam Bingham will be on the broadcast for BTN StudentU.
The Spartans started the week with a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's on Oct. 11 to end non-conference action.
SERIES HISTORY AGAINST SAINT MARY'S
Michigan State holds a 6-1-1 overall series lead over Rutgers. Last season, the Spartans earned a 2-1 overtime win in Piscataway when the Scarlet Knight were ranked No. 22. Jack Zugay scored the golden goal for MSU. The Scarlet Knights only win game during the Spring 2020 season indoors at Schoolcraft. The first meeting of the series when RU joined the Big Ten was the only tie in the series, 0-0 in 2014, before MSU won five-straight games.
LOOKING AT THE SCARLET KNIGHTS
Rutgers is currently 6-2-5 overall and 2-1-2 in Big Ten play. In league action, the Scarlet Knights have wins over Northwestern and Wisconsin and ties against Ohio State and Indiana. Rutgers only loss came against then-No. 8 Maryland on Oct. 4. Temple Jackson and Jason Bouregy are tied for first in assists with five apiece.
MD Myers leads the Big Ten in goals with 11 as part of a high powered Scarlet Knight offense. RU has scored 30 goals this season, while allowing only 23. Ciaran Dalton has started eight game in net for Rutgers allowing only 10 goals for a 1.25 goals against average. Aurie Briscoe started five games, allowing 13 goals for a 2.60 GAA.
NEW LOOK SPARTANS
Michigan State's rookies have had solid campaigns. Transfers Elijah Howe and Owen Finnerty have been solid fixtures in the Spartan offense starting 11 and 12 games, respectively.
Freshmen Jack Guggemos, Jake Spadafora and Jeremy Sharp have all started at least two games this season. Freshman Jonathan Stout has come on strong of late with one goal and an assist total over the last three games. Stout scored a goal against Michigan on Sept. 27 and added an assist on the game-winning goal against Wisconsin on Oct. 2. Guggemos is third on the team in scoring with three goals and one assist for seven points.
LOGGING IN THE MINUTES
There are two Spartans who have surpassed 1,000 minutes this season in senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty (1,065) and sophomore defender Josh Adam (1,054). Senior Jack Beck and junior midfielder Jack Zugay are next with 982 and 946, respectively.
SENIORS GET IT DONE
Against Saint Mary's, the Spartans relied on their senior leaders for offense. Senior defender Will Perkins gave Michigan State the early lead with an assist from fellow seniors Jack Beck and Louis Sala. Beck then scored the game-winning goal with Sala adding another assist. Perkins returned to the lineup against Penn State on Oct. 7 after missing three games with an injury.

Freshman midfielder Jack Guggemos' three goals this season are the most by a Spartan freshman since Jack Beck and Farai Mutatu both scored three during the 2018 season.

FINNERTY EARNS B1G HONOR
Senior goalkeeper Owen Finnerty earned the Spartans' first Player of the Week honor of the season after MSU went 2-0-0 on Oct. 3. The goalkeeper registered a pair of clean sheets to lead Michigan State to wins over Michigan and Wisconsin.
In the Battle of the Big Bear Trophy on Sept. 27, Finnerty, a Michigan transfer, earned MSU's first shutout of the season with a 2-0 win over the Wolverines. He collected seven saves in the victory. Against Wisconsin on Oct. 2, the Spartans earned a 1-0 win with the senior capturing five saves. He helped MSU to back-to-back shutout wins for the first time since the 2017 season.

All five of the Spartans game-winning goals have come from different people. Greyson Mercer, Jack Beck, Louis Sala, Gianni Ferri and Jake Spadafora all have game-winning goals this season.

Michigan State historically is among the nation's best in packing DeMartin Stadium. This week, MSU is fourth in the nation in attendance, averaging 2,365 fans per game. The Spartans are first in the Big Ten ahead Indiana (2,223) and Maryland (2,184), who stand fifth and sixth in the nation respectively. MSU's largest crowd of the season was the 3,047 fans that packed DeMartin to watch MSU beat Michigan on Sept. 27.

With a 2-0 win over Michigan on Sept. 27, Michigan State earned its first shutout of the season. MSU has allowed one goal to Army, Western Michigan, Bowling Green, Chicago State and Indiana. Before the win against the Wolverines, the Spartans last shutout was a 1-0 win against Ohio State on Oct. 17, 2021 in East Lansing.
