EAST LANSING, Mich. - Led by Celina Riccardo's sudden death overtime goal, Michigan State topped Indiana, 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Ralph Young Field.Â
The Spartans move to 7-7 overall and 1-6 in conference play with the win, notching their first Big Ten of the season. Indiana falls to 8-8 overall and 1-5 in the league. The game served as the Spartans' annual pink game for breast cancer awareness.Â
The Spartans and Hoosiers battled defensively throughout regulation with both teams limiting the shot count and penalty corner opportunities. MSU recorded the lone shot in the first quarter, an on-target shot from Merel Hanssen, but were outshot 12-6 in regulation. Despite Indiana's seven shots on goal and Michigan State's six, neither team was able to get on the board in regulation, sending the game into overtime. Â
Riccardo, Lulu Fulton and Georgia Davies also recorded shots in regulation for the Spartans.Â
Michigan State dominated possession early in overtime with Hanssen recording a pair of shots in the first two minutes. Hanssen drew a penalty corner in the 63rd minute after her second shot to set up the game-winning play for the Spartans. On the penalty corner play, Riccardo passed to Ellie Rutherford, who passed back to Riccardo in the middle of the circle for Riccardo to send the ball in for the goal. The goal was Riccardo's first of the season. Rutherford added her second assist of the season.Â
Graduate goalkeeper Monique Jardell recorded her first shutout of the season with the win, making seven saves in the net. The game marked the fourth overtime game of the season for the Spartans.Â
"It feels great to get our first conference win as we have had two tough overtime losses and other close games in conference play," said Michigan State head coach Helen Knull. "Monique Jardell came up with some huge saves today and Celina's goal was played perfectly with poise. We will enjoy this win and reset for Central Michigan on Wednesday."Â
Up next, Michigan State heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a midweek nonconference matchup with Central Michigan on Wednesday, Oct. 19. Pass back is set for 3 p.m.Â
