Michigan State Head Coach Suzy Merchant
On the play of Theryn Hallock…
She keeps it simple, I thought she was very effective against Louisville playing downhill, she took care of the ball better than the scrimmage on Monday, but her effort is phenomenal. She's a 'focus and finish at the rim' type of kid, so I was really impressed with her. She has some work to do in certain areas, but her effort and energy is great and she wants to learn and plays really hard.
On the play of the transfers Gabby Elliot and Kamaria McDaniel...
I didn't like how we played in the first half, especially the first quarter, we had so many easy looks and just didn't make shots. I thought the kids were a little wild at the rim at times, K-Mac (Kamaria McDaniel) had some of those early, but she settled in a little better in the second half just like all of us did. I liked how she got downhill, that kid can really get to the free throw line and she shoots it well from there.
On the depth of this team…
It's really nice to have a lot of players. We're still down two players, Abbey Kimball is out with illness, and Julia Ayrault probably could have given us some time today but we figured we would just wait until November 7 comes for her to give her some more time. As good as our depth was, we still have a couple of players that will be in uniform soon. We're going to have to figure out the rotation and the other thing is people have to perform when they play, you don't just get to play because you have a pass. Players that are playing better than you and doing a better job will play. It's not personal, it's business you just have to perform.
Freshman Guard Theryn Hallock
On the mentality as a freshman making the most of the opportunities and proving you belong...
I have just been trying to do my best as a point guard and a guard as a whole, just to get the ball to everybody and do my part. With having good teammates behind my back its just, I know I can do the things I need to do and all I have to do is keep on my ball pressure. I am a little disappointed in my defensive side today, but it is the exhibition game, so we will be getting better and I will keep doing my thing and I will also keep doing my thing as a guard and pushing the ball, getting up and down the floor, shooting the ball as I should and just being a good teammate.
On the mindset coming in and trying to find a niche with this team...
My mindset was just to come in and be myself, I am not going to change for anybody, I am going to continue to be me and continue to be that really good teammate and person, and I'm just going to continue to use my speed and use my agility and all those things just to be the best player out there that I can be.
How much do you think that has helped...
I feel proud of myself, like I said I have to work on my defensive stuff a little bit and coach Suzie's on me about that just because I am going to be, try to be the best defender out there. With Louisville scrimmage I played good minutes and I played well so I just have to translate that and through the season.
