THE ORIGINAL SIX:Â What you need to know about Spartan Hockey
• Michigan State opens the 2022-23 season this weekend when it engages in a home-and-home series with Bowling Green.  The Friday game will be played in East Lansing, and the return game on Saturday at the BGSU Ice Arena.  Once longtime conference rivals, this will be the 115 and 116th meetings of MSU and Bowling Green all-time.  The Spartans hold a 74-32-9 mark in the meetings, which includes a 42-11-3 mark in East Lansing.  The Falcons are 25-19-6 against the Spartans in their home arena.  The teams have met just once since the end of the 'old' CCHA at the conclusion of the 2012-13 campaign.  The teams each defended home ice in a home-and-home in October 2017. Â
• Adam Nightingale embarks on his first collegiate season behind the bench, and is the eighth head coach in Michigan State program history.  Nightingale is one of 24 Division I coaches who are at the helm of their alma mater, and one of 12 with NHL coaching experience.Â
•  MSU played an exhibition game on Saturday with the US National Team Development Program, and its late rally fell short in a 4-3 loss.  After the Spartans tied the game at 1-1 in the second period on a goal by Karsen Dorwart, Team USA scored three goals in a 5:20 span to regain the lead and blow open a 4-3 advantage.  MSU got back into the game in the third on goals from Tiernan Shoudy and Jeremy Davidson, but could not find the equalizer.  Dylan St. Cyr made 19 saves in the first two frames, while Pierce Charleson had just four in the third period.Â
•  The Spartans return each of their top three scorers from a year ago.  Sophomore Jesse Tucker (2-22-24) centered senior Erik Middendorf (12-8-20) and junior Jeremy Davidson (11-11-22) last season.   Grad transfer forward Miroslav Mucha will serve as the 2022-23 captain.
•  MSU returns five of its everyday blueliners from a year ago - Nash Nienhuis skated in every game on the top pair a year ago, while David Gucciardi (a 2022 Washington draft pick) and Christian Krygier also played in all 36, Cole Krygier skated in 35, and Powell Connor skated in 28 games.  All three alternate captains this season are defensemen:  Cole and Christian Krygier and Nienhuis. Â
 •  Pierce Charleson made 12 appearances last season, with a 3-8-0 overall record, .904 save percentage, and 3.65 GAA.   He's joined by junior Jon Mor and grad transfer Dylan St. Cyr, who last year played 13 games, starting 11, and compiled a 1.17 GAA and .936 save percentage, helping backstop Quinnipiac to the NCAA Tournament.  Â
