Garza Leads 10 Spartans to Podium Finishes at the 2022 MSU Open

EAST LANSING, Mich. – Highlighted by freshman Ceasar Garza's undefeated effort at 174 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division, a total of 10 different Michigan State wrestlers garnered podium finishes at the 2022 MSU Open inside Jenison Field House on Saturday.

Garza's title at freshman/sophomore 174 led the way for the Green & White, as the Oakdale, California, native published four individual victories that included a pin, major decision, and pair of decisions. Garza opened action with a 9-2 victory over Bryer Hall of Ohio State and followed that effort up with a dominant performance against Andre Rocker of Northwestern, pinning his Wildcat opponent in one minute and 13 seconds. His success continued with a 9-5 semifinal decision over Shane Moran of NIU, and he completed his title run with a 9-1 major against JR Reed of Cleveland State.

Elsewhere in the freshman/sophomore division, freshmen Braden Stauffenberg and Kael Wisler rolled en route to 2nd place finishes in the 149 and 184 classes, respectively. Stauffenberg opened Saturday's action with consecutive falls over David Shue of Lake Erie (1:57) and JayJay Shuall of Olivet (0:46), following his red-hot start with a 4-1 decision against Central Michigan's Grayson Sonntag before falling to Derek Raike of Ohio in the 149 final. Wisler earned a pin late in the third period against Northern Illinois' Carter Grewe and booked a 7-2 decision over Mason Clem of Ohio in the semifinals before dropping a 13-5 major to Rylan Roger of Michigan.

Junior Caleb Fish continued Michigan State's history of individual success in the open division, registering a third-place finish at 165 pounds. After booking a first-round bye, Fish pinned Andrew Knick of Findlay in four minutes and 11 seconds, following that decisive result with a commanding 14-1 major decision over David Ferrante of Northwestern. Despite a 6-4 setback to Izzak Olejnik in the semifinals, Fish rebounded to pin CMU's Tracy Hubbard (3:26) and log a 6-1 decision in the third-place match.

Redshirt junior Jordan Hamdan published five individual match victories of his own in the open division 141 bracket, solidifying a fourth-place finish. After starting with a fall over Jackson Oplotnik of Oklahoma (2:03), Hamdan reached a 7-4 decision against Chippewa challenger Mason Breece. Yielding a pin in his quarterfinal bout with Jaivon Jones of NIU, Hamdan responded with both a major decision and decision in his next two consolation contests. Following a medical forfeit by his Utah Vally opponent, the Hudson, Michigan, native fell in a closely-contested 3-1 match against Jordan Decatur of Ohio State but finalized his fourth-place result in the process.

Sophomore Jacob Lee finished fourth at freshman/sophomore 197, while freshman Ryan Boucher completed a fifth-place outing at freshman/sophomore 174. Freshman Jacob Munger (freshman/sophomore 184), graduate Benny Gomez (open 125) and graduate Ryan Vasbinder (open 285) each published sixth-place efforts, rounding out the 10 Spartans who reached the podium.

Michigan State wrestling starts the 2022-23 dual slate on the road in the Carolinas next week, as the Spartans open action on Friday, Nov. 11 against the Davidson Wildcats on the road in Davidson, North Carolina. The Spartans remain on the road on Saturday, Nov. 12, as MSU challenges Presbyterian College in Charleston, South Carolina. First whistle in both duals is slated for 6 p.m.
