St. Cyr, Middendorf Earn B1G Star Honors

East Lansing -- Michigan State standouts Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) and Erik Middendorf (Scottsdale, Ariz.) have been named the Big Ten First Star and Third Star of the week, as announced by the Conference office.

Michigan State is coming off a sweep of Wisconsin (5-0, 5-1) at Munn Ice Arena last weekend. St. Cyr was exceptional in both games in the Spartan net, turning away 88 of 89 shots against. His 44 saves in each game is his season best, and he posted his first shutout of the season and 11th of his career on Friday.  St. Cyr has played in nine of MSU's 10 games this season (and all four Big Ten contests). He leads the Big Ten with a .938 save percentage overall (sixth nationally) and is third (12th nationally) with a 1.89 GAA. He ranks third in the Big Ten in saves per game, (28.44), and his 17 goals allowed on the year is the third fewest in the Big Ten.

St. Cyr has had 39 or more saves over the last three games, all Big Ten contests. In the second game at Notre Dame, he stopped 39 an as importantly, turned away two shots in the shootout to help MSU secure the extra point in the Big Ten standings. He had 28 saves in the first game against the Irish, his former team.

Meanwhile, Erik Middendorf had a career night of his own against Wisconsin on Friday. Middendorf produced a four-goal outburst, MSU's first four-goal performance since January of 1998 when Sean Berens scored four times in a 6-1 win over Northern Michigan. His single-game performance puts him in a tie for 10th in the Big Ten in goals (4). He has a 4-1-5 scoring line over 10 games and is the only player in the country to net four or more goals in a game this season.Â

The Spartans sit in fourth place in the Big Ten standings with a 2-1-1 record through four conference contests. Overall, the squad is 6-3-1 and is receiving votes in both national polls.  MSU hosts No. 10 Ohio State this Thursday and Friday at Munn Ice Arena.Â
