PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Michigan State wrestling gets set for its final dual meet of the 2022 fall semester, as the Spartans face off against the EIWA challenger Brown Bears in a 7 p.m. start inside the Pizzitola Sports Center on Saturday, Dec. 10.
HEAD COACH ROGER CHANDLER SAID…
"I am really looking forward to watching our guys get better in the areas where we struggled last week at the Garden State Grapple. The sign of a great wrestler is that they adjust from week to week, and get better as the season goes on. Our group here could be a very special team when all is said and done, but we have to continue making improvements and adjusting with new information as the year continues if we want to have success as a group. I think this early season slate has really allowed us to find key areas of improvement while we continue to develop our guys to have success later in the year."
TALKIN' TOP-25
After receiving votes in every previous week, Michigan State wrestling cracked the top-25 of the National Wrestling Coaches Association weekly coaches poll, rising to the No. 25 position in the rankings released on Dec. 6. The ranking marked the first for MSU since climbing to No. 15 in the final rankings of the 2021-22 slate. MSU's season-ending selection marked the highest final ranking for a Michigan State team since closing the 2002-03 season ranked seventh in the nation. Last season, MSU cracked the top-25 for the first time on Jan. 18, after receiving votes in every week of the season prior to that date. The Spartans garnered the No. 21 ranking and steadily climbed in each succeeding week. Before spending all but one week ranked during the 2020-21 season, the Spartans had not received a regular season ranking from the NWCA since 2009.
GARDEN STATE OF MIND
Spartan wrestling took part in the second annual Garden State Grapple on Sunday, Dec. 4, with the Green & White joining an eight-team field featuring a quartet of challengers from the Big Ten and EIWA, respectively. Michigan State toppled Binghamton by a 29-6 margin before besting the Princeton Tigers in a 21-15 thriller in the nightcap at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Redshirt senior and then-No. 15 Layne Malczewski logged a pair of ranked wins at the event, downing No. 25 Jacob Nolan of Binghamton, 1-0, before logging an 8-4 decision over Princeton's No. 32 Nate Dugan at 184 pounds. Graduate Cameron Caffey booked the highest ranked win of his young season, earning a riding-time victory in the second tiebreaker period against seventh-ranked Lou DePrez of Binghamton at 197. Additionally, juniors Tristan Lujan, Jordan Hamdan and Peyton Omania went 2-0 at the event.
FIRST LOOK: BROWN
Brown enters Saturday evening's matchup prepared for its first dual meet of the 2022-23 campaign. The Bears are led by first-year head coach and former NCAA Champion at 157 pounds, Jordan Leen. Brown's new skipper spent the past six seasons as the Associate Head Coach at Pittsburgh. The Bears have competed in two open tournaments prior to Saturday evening, and will face off against Leen's former program in No. 20 Pittsburgh on Friday, Dec. 9, inside the Pizzitola Sports Center. First whistle for Brown's home opener is slated for 7 p.m. on ESPN+. Individually, Brown's lineup is led by senior 125-pounder Shane Hanson-Ashworth, who has yet to compete in the 2022-23 slate. Hanson-Ashworth is rated as the No. 35 wrestler in the nation at his weight class according to WrestleStat, and will face off against No. 21 Tristan Lujan. MSU and Brown face off for just the second time, with the Spartans taking the only previous meeting during the 1937-38 campaign.
