Schulte Earns B1G Freshman of the Week Honors

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State gymnast Skyla Schulte was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Tuesday afternoon.
Schulte was previously named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 10 after MSU's first meet of 2022 at UC Davis with Sacramento State. Fellow freshman Gabrielle Stephen earned the award in Week Two after the tri-meet with Bowling Green and Illinois State. Both were also named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch prior to the start of the season.
Spartan gymnasts have garnered Freshman of the Week honors in three of the first four weeks of competition thus far.
A native of Bolingbrook, Illinois, Schulte placed third overall in the all-around on Sunday's meet with No. 1 and defending National Champion Michigan, posting a personal-best 39.350. Schulte has competed all-around in every meet so far for the Green & White, scoring a 39.000 or higher each time.
Schulte also set new personal-best scores in the beam and floor events. She tied for fourth overall on beam with a 9.875 and tied for fifth on floor, posting a 9.900 for the second time in her Spartan career.
Schulte ranks ninth in the Big Ten and 34th in the nation all-around. She has won three event titles for the Green and White over four meets. On Jan. 22 against Iowa, she posted the fifth-best uneven bars score in Spartan history when she finished the routine with a 9.925.
The Spartans are back in action at home this Saturday, Feb. 5 against Maryland. The meet, which will celebrate both Alumni Day and National Girls and Women in Sports Day, is set to begin a 7 p.m. inside Jenison Field House. MSU's current vaccination policy for spectators can be found here.Â
