LEESBURG, Fla. – Sophomore Ashley Miller etched her name in the Michigan State softball record book on Sunday, throwing the third perfect game in program history and the first seven inning perfect game ever for the Spartans in a 6-0 win over Akron. Miller joins Megan Hair (six innings), and Becky Gray/Jessica Beech (combined) as the only Michigan State softball players to ever achieve perfection.
Sunday was just the cherry on top of an outstanding weekend for Miller, who went 3-0 with three complete game shutouts, striking out 29 batters and allowing just 11 baserunners in 21 innings pitched. Miller's 14 strikeouts against Akron tied for the most by a Spartan pitcher in a seven-inning contest and rank third overall behind two extra-inning performances by Jessica Beech in 2003. Miller struck out eight consecutive batters to open the game.
Michigan State improved its record to 3-2 to open the season, earning wins over Pitt, UConn and Akron at the Northern Lights Invitational.
Miller was backed by a strong offense on Sunday as the Spartans scored six runs on 11 hits against the Akron pitching staff. Senior Courtney Callahan, junior Kennedy Wyllie, freshman Kayleigh Roper and freshman Macy Lee all turned in multi-hit performances for MSU. Lee drove in two baserunners for the team-high in RBI.
Senior Caitie Ladd opened the scoring for Michigan State in the first inning, coming around to score off a series of wild pitches.
The Spartans added two runs to the final tally in the top of the fourth following another two-out rally, a common theme throughout the weekend. A double from Wyllie got things started for MSU before Roper doubled her home in the next at-bat. Lee singled home Roper to give Michigan State a 3-0 advantage.
Michigan State added two more runs in the top of the fifth after Callahan singled to open the inning. Senior Abby Joseph reach on a fielder's choice and stole second base, only for an errant throw to allow her to take third as well. A single to left center from Wyllie scored Joseph before an up the middle single by Lee scored Wyllie from second.
MSU added a final run for good measure in the top of the seventh when a single by junior Camryn Wincher scored sophomore Zaquai Dumas, who doubled, from second.
With Akron hunting for a hit in the final frame, Miller sent the first two batters down swinging before forcing a 6-3 groundout.
Up Next: The Spartans travel to Jacksonville, Fla. next weekend where the team will play doubleheaders against North Florida and Jacksonville. North Florida is 4-1 to start the season while Jacksonville is 0-4.
