JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After both of its scheduled contests were postponed due to rain on Friday, the Michigan State softball team earned a pair of victories on Saturday, Feb. 19 to improve to 5-2 on the season. In game one, the Spartans defeated Mercer in extra innings, 2-1, before defeating Jacksonville in the night cap by a final score of 10-2.
Sophomore Ashley Miller continued her dominance in the circle in game one of the split double-header, pitching her fourth complete game of the season. Miller struck out 12 batters over eight innings pitched, allowing four hits, three walks and her first earned run of the season. Miller is now 4-0 on the season with a 0.24 ERA and a 0.62 WHIP to go along with 41 strikeouts through 29 innings of work.
The Spartans were the first team on the scoreboard in game one after freshman Macy Lee doubled home junior Camryn Wincher. Wincher, who singled in the first inning, finished game one 3-for-4 at the plate.
Mercer threatened to score in the bottom of the fifth when a two-out single by Rebeca Laudino and a walk from Tori Hedgecock loaded the bases following a Spartan error. Miller dug deep and struck out the final batter of the inning to end the threat. Mercer put two on base in the sixth as well, but once again Miller thwarted the opportunity.
The Bears finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh when a Hedgecock single scored Alyssa Woods and tied the game at 1-1.
Playing in its first extra-innings game of the season, Michigan State came through in the clutch. With one out, senior Jessica Mabrey doubled to left field. Down to the final out of the inning, Wincher stepped up to the plate and delivered, singling to center field to score Mabrey and give the Spartans a 2-1 lead.
Miller induced two ground outs and struck out one in the eighth inning to shut the door on the Bears.
Michigan State's offense broke out in a big way in game two, putting 10 runs on the board against Jacksonville to end the game in five innings. The Spartans clubbed three long balls, with senior Mackenzie Meech, Wincher and Lee each knocking one out of the park. Lee's homer was the first of her career and Wincher's left the yard with the bases loaded for a grand slam.
Wincher is off to a hot start this season, leading the team in batting average at .579. The Houston, Texas native was 6-for-7 at the plate on Saturday with three hits in each game.
Junior Sarah Ladd picked up her first win in the circle, striking out four in five innings of work. Ladd lowered her season ERA to 3.15 in the effort.
Lee's first inning two-run homer started the party for Michigan State, but a pair of doubles from by Jacksonville tied the game up at 2-2 in the bottom of the third.
The Spartans tacked eight runs on the board in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach. Wincher, who led the inning off with a single, capped the scoring with a grand slam. Wincher, Lee, Meech, sophomore Alexis Barroso, senior Caitie Ladd, senior Kendall Kates, freshman Kayleigh Roper and senior Jessica Mabrey all reached base during the inning. Barroso, along with Lee and Wincher, turned in a multi-hit effort in the win.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will play a doubleheader against North Florida on Sunday, February 20 to wrap up the trip to Jacksonville. North Florida is 6-1 on the season and has won three straight. First pitch is scheduled for 10 a.m.
