MSU improves to 8-6 overall and finishes its time at the Florida Atlantic University Strikeout Cancer tournament with a record of 3-2. The Spartans defeated Jacksonville, Columbia and Long Island over the course of the three-day event.
In game one, Michigan State scored the lone run of the game in the first inning when freshman Macy Lee singled home senior Jessica Mabrey on a frozen rope to center field. Mabrey led off the home half of the first inning with a hit by pitch, the fourth time she's been plunked this season.
Freshman Faith Guidry and junior Sarah Ladd combined to shutout the Lions, allowing three hits and striking out four. Guidry earned her first career win in a Spartan uniform while Ladd tallied her first save of the season. After tossing 5.1 scoreless innings Guidry lowered her season ERA to 2.68.
Michigan State struck first once again in game two when Mabrey singled home senior Mackenzie Meech from third. Meech doubled down the left field line before being bunted over the third by freshman Kayleigh Roper. Mabrey has been the straw that stirs the drink for Michigan State as of late getting on base at a .500 clip this season.
Long Island tied the game up at 1-1 on a single to right field in the bottom of the sixth. The score remained tied heading into extra innings where the Spartans would put five runs on the board.
With a runner on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, senior Mackenzie Meech drove in fifth-year Caitie Ladd on a single to center. Mabrey extended Michigan State's advantage to 4-1 with a home run to deep center that hit off the top of the wall and went over. It's Mabrey's second home run of the season and a team-best through 14 games.
LIU tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the eighth to force a ninth inning. A bloop single down the left field line scored the tying run for LIU after a single and a sac fly scored earlier runners.
Michigan State wasn't going down without a fight however, scoring two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 6-4 lead. Sophomore Alexis Barroso opened the inning with a triple to the wall in right center to score senior Kendall Kates from second base. Redshirt sophomore Jenae Wash then hit a sac fly to score Barroso from third.
MSU shut the door on LIU in the bottom of the ninth to secure its eighth victory of the season.
Sophomore Ashley Miller drew the start in game two, pitching 1.2 innings before Ladd came on in relief. Miller struck out two batters, allowing no runs in her limited work. Ladd pitched 7.1 strong innings of relief, striking out eight and allowing one earned run on six hits.
Mabrey, Wincher, Barroso and Meech all finished game two with multi-hit games, with Mabrey driving in a game-high three RBI.
Up Next: Michigan State travels to the Carolinas for spring break March 4-13. The Spartans will face five different teams and play 10 games in 10 days.
