EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State gymnast Skyla Schulte was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week on Tuesday afternoon by the B1G conference. This gives the Spartans back-to-back Freshman of the Week accolades, as this week's award for Schulte comes on the heels of fellow freshman Gabrielle Stephen's honor last week. Overall, this gives Schulte her third Freshman of the Week nod this season.Â
Schulte had a strong showing for the Spartans on February 26 at Ohio State, lending a hand in MSU earning its fifth-highest team score in program history, a 196.850.Â
The Bolingbrook, Ill. native won the all-around on Saturday with a final score of 39.425 to earn her third all-around title of the season. She also secured a share of first place on beam with a career-high 9.900. She wrapped up the meet with scores of 9.825 on both vault and bars, and a 9.875 on floor to add to her total all-around numbers.Â
Schulte's all-around score was her third-best this season and the 10th highest in Spartan history. She set her career-high of 39.475 on February 13 against Illinois, and currently ranks seventh in the Big Ten along with 20th in the nation as an all-arounder.Â
The Spartans have collectively received six Freshman of the Week accolades this season, split evenly between Schulte and Stephen. Both were also named Big Ten Gymnasts to Watch prior to the start of the season.Â
Michigan State hosts Western Michigan on Saturday, March 5 in the last home meet of the season. Competition begins at 7 p.m. inside Jenison Field House and will include a Senior Day celebration for MSU's five graduating seniors.
