Michigan State Holds On For 76-72 Win Over Maryland in Big Ten Tournament

Indianapolis, Ind. – Michigan State saw a 20-point lead shrink to two in the waning moments of the second half, but two late free throws from freshman guard Max Christie helped the No. 7-seed Spartans close out a 76-72 victory over 10th-seeded Maryland in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Christie led MSU with 16 points in his postseason debut, going 3-for-3 from beyond the arc and adding six rebounds on the defensive end. Senior forward Gabe Brown also reached double figures with 13 points while pulling down six rebounds.

- MSU extended its 43-34 halftime lead to start the second half, as two jumpers from senior forward Marcus Bingham Jr. kicked off a 14-3 surge that put the Spartans ahead by 20 points, 57-37, capped off by Brown's 3-pointer with 13:04 left.
- Maryland chipped away at the deficit by getting six of the next seven buckets, with a Donta Scott 3-pointer cutting the lead to 59-49 at the 9:07 mark
- After Hakim Hart cut the lead to single digits,65-56, with a fastbreak dunk at 5:38, freshman guard Jaden Akins connected on a 3-pointer to put the lead to 12 again, 68-56, with 3:10 left.
- A Fatts Russell 3-pointer on the fastbreak at the 1:33 mark closed a 9-0 UMD run that made it 68-65, but junior guard Tyson Walker made two free throws at 1:26.
- Russell was fouled on a made jumper with 1:06 remaining, as his free throw was good to cut the MSU edge to 70-68.
- Walker's jumper in the paint with 40 seconds left and Christie made two free throws with 0:31 remaining to make it a six-point edge, 68-74.
- Two layups from the Terrapins cut the lead to 74-72 with 16 seconds left and caused a MSU turnover, but Christie rebounded a missed 3-pointer from Russell and was fouled, making both ends of a one-and-one to put MSU ahead, 76-72.
- Michigan State went 16-for-28 from the field (57.14%) and 7-for-11 from 3-point land (63.64%) in the opening 20 minutes to take a 43-34 lead into halftime.
