Men's Tennis Kicks off Spring Break with Match against Princeton

TEMPE, Ariz. - Michigan State men's tennis took on Princeton on Friday afternoon in the team's first match of the Arizona State Spring Break Tournament. The Spartans fell to the 30th-ranked Tigers squad 4-0 at the Kiwanis Tennis Center.
MSU moves to 10-4 overall and will play the loser of the match between Wichita State and Tulane in the consolation semifinals bracket on Saturday.
"It was a tough match for the Spartans," head coach Gene Orlando commented. "We will regroup and be ready for our next match tomorrow."
Princeton clinched the doubles point over the Spartans with victories on courts two and three. Freshman Max Sheldon and senior Carson Gates took on Justin Barki and Damian Rodriguez of the Tigers in a battled that ended in a 6-3 victory for the Princeton duo. Doubles action ended following the match as Thomas Bosancic and Bill Duo won 6-1 over Spartan pair Josh Mukherjee and Graydon Lair.
The Tigers quickly went up 3-0 with wins on the top two courts against MSU. Jack Winkler fell 6-0, 6-0 to 85th-ranked Ryan Seggerman at No. 1. Graydon Lair battled it out at No. 2 with Barki, the match ending in a 6-3, 6-2 victory by Barki. Princeton won the match with a final victory at No. 5. Luke Baylis took his first set into extra points, but Rodriguez earned the win 7-6, with a 6-3 second-set victory to wrap up the match.
At No. 3, Sheldon fell in his first set 6-3 but turned the tides with a 6-2 victory in the second set. The match went unfinished with a 2-1 advantage in his opponent Karl Poling's favor. The Spartans picked up one first set against the Tigers when Carson Gates won his opening set 6-2 against Will Peters at No. 4. Gates was tied 5-5 with Princeton's Will Peters before the match went unfinished.
The Spartans are back in action on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13 at the ASU Spring Break Tournament.
