Took home pair of All-American honors at the 2022 NCAA Indoor Championships
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State graduate student Morgan Beadlescomb racked up another award in an impressive indoor season, as the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced Thursday that the NCAA men's mile silver medalist has been named the USTFCCCA Indoor Men's Track Athlete of the Year.
This marks the first time in program history a Spartan has been named the regional male track athlete of the year during the indoor season.
Beadlescomb entered the campaign as a two-time Indoor NCAA All-American and opened the season by taking first place in the Simmons-Harvey Invitational's men's mile race. He then set school records in both the mile and 3000m distances this season, being the top collegiate finisher at a 7:43.22 PR in the Millrose Games' 3000m race and then running the fourth-fastest indoor mile in NCAA history with a 3:52.03 PR at the Windy City Invite. Both times were the top in the Big Ten this season, with the 3:52.03 mile being the best in the nation and the 7:43.22 run being the seventh-fastest in the NCAA.
At the 2022 Big Ten Indoor Championships, Beadlescomb picked up a pair of bronze-medal finishes. After running a sub-4:00 mile time in Friday's preliminaries, Beadlescomb's first of two races on Saturday afternoon saw him notch a mile time of 4:09.03 to place third. Racing the 3000m later on Saturday, Beadlescomb was towards the front as the race hit the fourth-last turn and made a move to briefly take first, but he was bumped twice in the final lap to place third at 13:56.61.
Qualifying for both the men's mile and 3000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships, Beadlescomb opened started the national championships by taking an early lead in Section 1 of the men's mile prelim and used that pace to cruise to the second-best time at 3:57.10, earning a spot in the finals. The following day, the Spartan stayed in the middle of the pack for most of the mile finals but made his way to towards the front in the final lap, and then used a burst in the final stretch to challenge Mario Garcia Romo of Ole Miss. The Spartan nearly caught the Rebel for the NCAA crown, finishing in second at 4:07.59 behind Garcia Romo's championship-winning time of 4:07.54, taking home First Team All-American honors. The MSU runner then got an hour of rest before taking part in the 3000m finals, as Beadlescomb fought to keep up with the main bunch until the final 600 meters, eventually finishing 12th at a time of 8:04.87 to pick up Second Team All-American distinction.
Beadlescomb previously received First Team All-America honors in the men's 5000m during the 2020 and 2021 indoor campaigns. Overall, the Spartan stands as a nine-time All-American with three Cross Country All-America distinctions (2019-2021) and two Outdoor All-America honors (2019 and 2021 in men's 5000m).
He is also the first MSU men's track and field athlete to earn two All-America honors at the same NCAA Indoor Championships since Antonio James in 2014. James was a First Team All-American in the weight throw and a Second Teamer in the shot put that year.
Michigan State opens the outdoor track and field season on March 24-26 at the Raleigh Relays.
