Spartans Host Purdue in Big Ten Match Saturday

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis closes out a three-match homestand with a Big Ten showdown against Purdue on Saturday, March 19 at noon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
The Spartans are 9-3 overall and 1-0 in league contests after a 5-2 road win at Indiana on March 13.
SCOUTING PURDUE
Purdue comes to East Lansing with an 8-4 record after suffering a 6-1 loss to No. 31 Tulsa on the road on March 5. This will serve as the Big Ten opener for the Boilermakers. No. 77 Csilla Fodor scored the lone singles point by overtaking No. 111 Laia Conde Monfort, 7-6, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot.
Fodor leads the way for the Boilermakers with a 10-1 record at No. 1 singles. Overall this season she is 23-3. Purdue had won three-straight games against DePaul, Butler and Illinois State, before losing to Tulsa.
LAST TIME OUT
Michigan State began its Big Ten Conference slate on March 13 with a 5-2 victory at the MSU Indoor Tennis Center.
With the win, the Spartans improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in league action, while the Hoosiers shifted to 7-7 on the season and 0-2 in the B1G.
In the span of 30 seconds, the Spartans took a 2-1 lead when sophomore Ayshe Can won her No. 4 singles battle with Mejic by a 6-1, 7-5 score, and senior Lauren Lemonds finished off Hu one court over in the No. 5 spot in a 6-3, 6-1 victory. IU briefly tied the team score at 3-3 when Masic defeated senior Nicole Stephens on the second court, 6-3, 6-4, but freshman Charlotte Gisclon put MSU back in front on the No. 6 court.
Senior Maja Pietrowicz clinched the match for Michigan State with a three-setter on the third court, battling past Staiculescu for a 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-2 victory.
ABOUT THE SPARTANS
Can leads the way for the Spartans with a 12-5 overall record. She is 9-3 in dual match play with a 7-3 mark at No. 4 singles. Gisclon and Lemonds both hold 11-8 singles records this season.
SERIES HISTORY
Overall, Purdue leads the over all series 17-6. Last season, Michigan State captured a 4-3 win against the Boilermakers in West Lafayette.
UP NEXT
After taking on the Boilermakers, the Spartans embark on a lengthy four-game road swing, beginning at Wisconsin (March 25) and Minnesota (March 27). Michigan State will round on the trip against Penn State (April 2)and Ohio State (April 3).
