EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's tennis dropped hard-fought battle to Purdue, 5-2 Saturday afternoon at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility.
Prior to the match, the team honored the legacy of former Spartan and 1993 All-Big Ten First Team selection Alicia Leone (1971-2021).
With the win, the Spartans fall to 9-4 overall and stand 1-1 in Big Ten games. Purdue improves to 9-4 and 1-0 in league contests.
"The end of doubles definitely gassed us a little bit. We had match point, that's tough to rebound from. Even in singles we put ourselves in a position to win, so I don't want to dwell on that. I think as a team we need to not let this define us. We know that we are capable if we can just compete a little bit more in moments. We need to be a little more aggressive, and we will be fine," MSU head coach Kim Bruno said.
The doubles point was a intense battle that came down to the final match on No. 1. Purdue's team of Tara Katarina Milic and Rut Galindo stopped senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can, 6-2 to start doubles on court No. 2. Senior Lauren Lemonds and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka defeated Carmen Guevara and Seira Shimizu on court No. 3, 6-3.
It all came down to court No. 1 where graduate Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz faced off against Csilla Fodor and Nathatlia Wolf Gasparin. After the Boilermakers jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, the Spartans battled back to go on top 5-4. From there, the teams exchanged games, forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6. Purdue finally clinched the double points, taking the tiebreaker 7-3.
In singles play, Michigan State tied the score at No. 4 singles with Can's 6-0, 6-2 straight set win over Juana Larranaga. Can improves to 13-5 this season in singles action.
The Boilermakers sealed the victory, winning the next three-straight matches. On court No. 6, Shimizu stopped freshman Charlotte Gisclon in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1. Purdue went up 3-1 with win at No. 3 singles where Milic defeated Stephens in a close battle, 6-2, 7-5. The match was clinched at the No. 2 spot when Guevara beat Pietrowicz, 6-1, 7-6 (3).
Lemonds was another bright spot for the Spartans, earning a 7-5, 7-5 win over Galindo on court No. 5. In another gut-wrenching match, Lewis fell to Fodor in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 4-6.
Michigan State now begins a grueling four-match road swing at Wisconsin on Friday, March 25 at 6 p.m. ET.
