EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team begins a four-match road trip in Big Ten play this weekend, heading west to take on Wisconsin and Minnesota. A Friday evening matchup with the Badgers at 6 p.m. will kick off the Spartans' weekend, while MSU will then face the Gophers at noon on Sunday to end the westward portion of the trip.
Coming in at No. 70 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings, MSU will look to get back in the win column after dropping a 5-2 loss to Purdue this past weekend to shift to 1-1 in conference action and 9-4 overall.
In their last match, the then-No. 60 Spartans saw the doubles point come down to court No. 1 where graduate Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to force a tiebreaker at 6-6, but Purdue finally clinched by winning the tiebreaker, 7-3. In singles play, Michigan State tied the score at No. 4 singles with sophomore Ayshe Can's 6-0, 6-2 straight-set win, but the then-No. 71 Boilermakers sealed the victory, winning the next three-straight matches. Senior Lauren Lemonds was the other Spartan singles player to win, earning a 7-5, 7-5 win on Court No. 5.
Can paces MSU with 13 singles victories, while Lemonds is second on the team at 12-8 in singles competition and is riding a seven-match winning streak into the weekend. On the doubles side, Lewis and Pietrowicz lead the way with 12 overall wins together, while Can and senior Nicole Stephens pace the team with seven doubles wins in dual-match play.
Wisconsin enters the week at No. 50 in the ITA rankings and 2-1 in B1G matches, defeating Rutgers last week, 6-1, before falling 4-3 to No. 39 Northwestern and rebounding with a 5-2 win at 68th-ranked Illinois. Ava Markham leads the team in singles play, sitting at 12-3 in dual matches, while Markham and Ariel Johnson have paired up to go 11-4 in doubles action. The Badgers also have the doubles pairing of Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova that rank 52nd in the nation and hold a 10-4 mark as a duo.
After opening the spring with 10-straight dual-match wins, Minnesota begins the week at 12-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten, coming in at No. 55 in the ITA rankings. After losing the conference opener to Nebraska, the Gophers pulled out a 6-1 victory over Iowa on March 7, but lost matches at Illinois and Northwestern this past weekend. Anfisa Danilchenko is atop the team with 19 overall singles wins, while Maria Rizzolo has 11 solo victories since dual-match season began. Rizzolo and Dalila Said have teamed up for a 10-1 record in doubles action, while Emilee Duong and Rachel Hanford are 10-4 as a pairing.
The Spartans are 14-44 all-time against the Badgers, picking up a 4-1 win over UW in the Big Ten Tournament last season, while MSU is 14-28 against the Gophers in 42 all-time meetings.
Michigan State will continue the road trip next weekend when the team travels east to play at Penn State on April 2 and Ohio State on April 3.
