Women’s Tennis Loses at Wisconsin to Begin Road Trip

Lewis and Pietrowicz Pick Up Ranked Doubles Win
MADISON, Wis. – Opening a four-match road trip, the Michigan State women's tennis team lost to host Wisconsin, 6-1, on Friday evening in Big Ten Conference action at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The defeat moved the Spartans to 9-5 overall and 1-2 in Big Ten play, while the Badgers improved to 11-6 on the season and a 3-1 conference record.
Doubles play began with Ariel Johnson and Ava Markham taking a 6-4 win over the No. 2 Spartan duo of senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can.
The Badgers clinched the doubles point on the third court when Taylor Cataldi and Charmaine Seah pulled out a 6-2 victory against senior Lauren Lemonds and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka. Despite the Badgers taking the doubles point, MSU's top doubles pairing of graduate student Mary Lewis and senior Maja Pietrowicz continued play and defeated the No. 52-ranked duo of Xinyu Cai and Alina Mukhortova by a 6-3 score on Court No. 1.
Wisconsin extended its lead to 2-0 when Cataldi captured a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Lemonds on the No. 5 singles court, while Seah beat freshman Charlotte Gisclon, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0 in the No. 6 spot. Markham locked up the win for the Badgers when she won a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Lewis on the top court, 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).
Singles action continued on, as Mukhortova came back to win her match against Stephens, picking up a 5-7, 7-5, 10-8 victory over the No. 3 Spartan player.
Antonela Stoica also battled back on the fourth court after dropping the first set in six-straight games, rallying for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Can.
The night finished on the No. 2 court, where Pietrowicz was able to recover after losing the opening set, winning the next two sets by identical scores to post a 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 victory against Xinyu Cai.
For Pietrowicz and Lewis, their doubles win moved the duo to 2-1 this season against nationally ranked competition and 13-10 overall.
Michigan State continues its road trip on Sunday, March 27 at Minnesota. The Spartans and Gophers are set to start at noon ET (11 a.m. CT) from the Baseline Tennis Center.
