EAST LANSING, Mich. – Originally scheduled for an off week, the Michigan State softball team picked up a game against Oakland University on Sunday, March 20, defeating the Golden Grizzlies in five innings, 9-0. Oakland was previously slated to play a Horizon League series against IUPUI over the weekend, but those games were postponed.
A pair of Oakland errors prolonged a seven-run fifth inning for the Spartans, allowing Michigan State to end the game in early. Freshman Kayleigh Roper finished the game with one swing of her bat, blasting a two-out grand slam over the left field wall for her first career home run. Sophomore Alexis Barroso joined Roper as a pair Spartan batters with four runs batted in on Sunday. Roper was 3-for-3 at the dish while Barroso was 2-for-3.
Sophomore Ashley Miller was dominant in the circle over five innings pitched, allowing one hit, and striking out eight in a shutout effort. It's Miller fifth complete game shutout of the season and her 12 complete game overall in 2022.
Michigan State peppered Oakland's Sydney Campbell for nine hits and three walks over 4.2 innings of work. Campbell allowed nine runs (two earned) and struck out three. Jessie Munson tallied the lone hit for the Golden Grizzlies.
With limited time to scout playing on short notice, the Spartan batters took one time through the lineup before cracking the code on Campbell. Roper led the bottom of the third off with a single, followed up by a single from senior Jessica Mabrey. Senior Courtney Callahan's sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position to set up a two-RBI single by Barroso.
Barroso plated Callahan and junior Camryn Wincher in the bottom of the fifth with a double to the wall in left center. Callahan reached on a walk while Wincher singled down the right field line. Fifth year Caitie Ladd and senior Mackenzie Meech each reached on errors in back-to-back at-bats, with senior Abby Joseph scoring from second on the error Ladd reached on. With two outs, freshman Macy Lee walked to load the bases for Roper, who hit a deep drive over the left field wall to clear the bases and end the game.
UP NEXT: Originally planned as the home opener, Michigan State remains at home for an intrastate rivalry game against Central Michigan at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22. CMU is 11-11 this season after taking two of three games from Akron over the weekend.
