EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State softball team shut out its fourth consecutive opponent on Tuesday afternoon, defeating Central Michigan in six innings, 8-0.
A win over CMU marks the fifth straight victory for the Spartans and improves Michigan State's overall record to 16-10 as the team heads into Big Ten play this weekend.
Michigan State played well in all facets of the game on Tuesday as the team was 9-for-21 at the plate, made no errors and didn't allow run to score. Junior Camryn Wincher and sophomore Alexis Barroso were each 2-for-3 at the plate with a walk and an RBI. Senior Jessica Mabrey also reached base three times on a hit and a pair of free bases. Fifth year Caitie Ladd, senior Mackenzie Meech, sophomore Zaquai Dumas, Mabrey, Wincher and Barroso all collected runs batted in for the Spartans.
In the circle, sophomore Ashley Miller threw five scoreless innings, while junior Sarah Ladd came on in relief to complete the six-inning shutout. Miller improved to 9-5 on the season, striking out five. Ladd struck out a pair of batters in her lone inning of work.
The Spartans jumped on Chippewa starter Kaitlyn Bean early, tagging her for six runs on six hits and six walks in 4.1 innings pitched. Relievers Maddy Wallace and Faith Howe each allowed an earned run.
Central Michigan opened the game with a pair of base hits to threaten early. Abbey Tolmie singled up the middle before advancing to third on a double down the left field line by Shannon Stein. Miller forced two ground outs and struck out one to end the early threat.
Michigan State responded by tacking one run on the board of their own in the bottom half of the first on a bloop double from Wincher. Central Michigan's right fielder misjudged the hop of the ball, which allowed Mabrey to score from second.
MSU added to runs to its tally in the third inning, using a sacrifice fly from Barroso to make it a 2-0 game. Senior Courtney Callahan and Wincher each reached base on singles to open the inning. After a Caitie Ladd walk, Meech singled to left to bring Wincher around to score.
The Chippewas left two runners on in the top of the fifth as Miller once again got herself out of a tough spot, striking out Stein swinging to end the inning.
Michigan State put up a four-spot in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead over Central Michigan. Barroso led off the inning with a single to center, and Caitie Ladd drew a full-count walk to start the inning. A sacrifice bunt from Meech moved the runners into scoring position before a wild pitch scored senior Abby Joseph, who pinch ran for Barroso. With Ladd standing at third, Dumas dropped a single into left field to give MSU a 5-0 lead. After a single from freshman Macy Lee, back-to-back wild pitches allowed Dumas to score. After a fly-out to center from freshman Kayleigh Roper, Mabrey doubled to deep center field scoring Lee from second.
A two-out triple by CMU's Kelsey Alexander looked to potentially give the Chippewas late life, but Sarah Ladd struck out the final batter of the inning to preserve the shutout.
Wincher and Barroso each reach base for the third time in the sixth inning to set up a sacrifice fly situation for Caitie Ladd. A line drive to center by Ladd was more than enough to score Wincher from third and end the game early after 5.1 innings.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will open Big Ten play against #11 Northwestern on Friday, March 25 at 4 p.m. eastern/3 p.m. central time. MSU travels to Evanston for a three-game series against a potent Wildcats team that is 19-4 this season.
