
Spartans Battle Frigid Temperatures in Loss at No. 11 Northwestern

EVANSTON, Ill. – Playing in conditions just above the minimum required temperature, the Michigan State softball team dropped game three of its Big Ten opening series at #11 Northwestern on Sunday, March 27, falling 9-1.
A loss on Sunday moves Michigan State's record to 16-13 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten.
Sophomore Ashley Miller started for the Spartans, allowing two earned runs over three innings of work and striking out three. Miller allowed five hits and walked two. Freshman Faith Guidry came on in relief, striking out a pair and allowing four earned runs in two innings pitched.
The Spartans were led on offense by senior Courtney Callahan and freshman Macy Lee, both of which collected hits for Michigan State. Senior Jessica Mabrey, Callahan and Lee also drew walks against Northwestern's Danielle Williams. Callahan scored the lone run of the game for MSU in the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by fifth year Caitie Ladd.
Williams turned in a strong performance in the circle for the Wildcats, striking out nine in six innings pitched, allowing just two hits and walking three.
Northwestern gradually built up a lead over the Spartans, scoring at least one run in each of the first four innings. After a scoreless fifth inning, Northwestern's Rachel Lewis hit a game-ending grand slam to put the Wildcats up by eight in the sixth.
UP NEXT: Michigan State will return to the friendly confines of Secchia Stadium for a non-conference doubleheader against Detroit Mercy on Tuesday, March 29. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 4 p.m.
