EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan State women's tennis team looks to improve its current six-match winning streak when the Spartans travel to Huntington, W.V., this weekend for a pair of contests. A Saturday neutral-site battle with James Madison opens up a three-match stretch in the state of West Virginia before facing host Marshall on Sunday morning, with MSU wrapping up the trip on Wednesday in Morgantown against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
At 6-1 this season, the Spartans are off to their best start since 2017-18 and are seeking to improve to 8-1 for the first time since 2016-17.
MSU is coming off a 7-0 sweep of Bowling Green on Feb. 26, as the Spartans were able to stay undefeated at home. The Green and White swept doubles play as senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can picked up a 6-2 victory for their second-straight win on the No. 1 court, freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka needed extra points to get a 7-5 win in the second spot, and senior Maja Pietrowicz paired with junior Monique Karoub for the first time to grab a 6-3 victory. Stephens then won the first singles match when her opponent medically defaulted, while Gisclon, senior Lauren Lemonds, junior Tia Mukherjee and Pietrowicz all won two-set matches and Can finished the sweep by winning a second-set tiebreaker over the Falcons' No. 3 player.
The rookie Gisclon paces the Spartans with a 10-5 singles record and has won six-straight matches, while Can sits second on the team at a 9-3 mark. Pietrowicz is behind Can at 8-4, and Stephens has four-straight wins to hold a 7-5 record.
On the doubles side, Pietrowicz and graduate student Mary Lewis have teamed up for a 9-7 record, going 2-2 in dual matches this season. A 6-4 overall mark for Can and Stephens has been buoyed by a 5-2 dual record, while Gisclon and Zdrubecka are 3-1 when playing together.
James Madison enters the showdown with MSU at 4-7 overall, most recently dropping a 4-3 contest to Missouri and a 4-0 match at No. 55 Mississippi State. The Dukes are led on the singles court by Kylie Moulin's 15-4 record, as she has gone 6-1 in duals splitting time between the second and third courts, while Amanda Nord has also reached double-digit wins at 11-7 despite a 4-4 dual mark. Moulin and Daria Afanasyeva are pacing JMU in doubles action with a 14-6 record, posting a 4-2 mark on the No. 2 court together.
Marshall will host JMU on Friday with a 7-7 record so far in dual matches, coming off a pair of losses in Denton, Texas to host North Texas and FIU last weekend. Emma Vanderheyden has gone 18-8 in singles competition, while her and Liz Stefancic hold a 13-5 record in doubles competition.
The Spartans' match with JMU will be the second meeting all-time between the schools, with the Dukes winning a 7-2 contest on March 24, 1984.
MSU and Marshall have met twice before, with the Thundering Herd taking a 6-1 victory in 2008 and a 4-3 win in 2009.
Michigan State will play at West Virginia on Wednesday, March 9 before coming home to host Columbia on March 12. The Spartans and head coach Kim Bruno then open Big Ten Conference play at home on March 13 against Indiana.
