HUNTINGTON, W.V. – The Michigan State women's tennis team saw its winning streak end on Saturday afternoon, as James Madison defeated the Spartans by a 4-1 score at the Brian David Fox Tennis Center.
MSU, ranked 62nd nationally by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, moved to 6-2 on the season, while JMU improved to 5-7 with the victory.
In doubles play, senior Maja Pietrowicz and Mary Lewis fell by a 6-3 score to the Dukes' No. 1 pairing of Daniela Voloh and Michelle Los Arcos, but senior Nicole Stephens and sophomore Ayshe Can picked up a 6-2 win over Kylie Moulin and Daria Afanasyeva on the second court. The No. 3 pairing of freshman Charlotte Gisclon and junior Dagmar Zdrubecka had to go to a tiebreaker to decide their match and lost the first three points in the tiebreaker set, but rattled off seven-straight points to come back and win 7-6 (7-3) over Natalia Nikolopoulou and Amanda Nord and securing the doubles point for MSU.
Singles action started with Moulin defeating Pietrowicz 6-4, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot, while Nikolopoulou beat Lewis 6-3, 6-2 on the top court. Voloh then picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win over Can on the fourth court, and Amanda Nord closed out the JMU victory when she won a 7-5, 7-6 (5) match against Gisclon. The matches between Stephens and Afanasyeva on Court No. 3, along with senior Lauren Lemonds against Hope Moulin on the fifth court, went unfinished.
"JMU did a better job of dealing with the outdoor conditions," said head coach Kim Bruno. "It was windy and we had a lot of trouble making shots consistently. We need to regroup before tomorrow and be ready to make more adjustments."
For the pairings of Can/Stephens and Gisclon/Zdrubecka, both duos have now won four-straight, while Gisclon's six-match winning streak came to and end with her loss to Nord.
Michigan State continues its road trip in West Virginia on Sunday, March 6 when the Spartans take on host Marshall at 10 a.m. ET.
